NAM President Engler Commends Congress for Approving U.S.-UAE "123" Civil Nuclear Agreement

National Association Of Manufacturers (NAM)

NAM Chief Sees Opportunities for Jobs in the United States

WASHINGTON, D.C, Oct. 22, 2009 - The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President John Engler today issued the following statement in response to Congress's notification that the "123" agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation has passed the legislative review period without being rejected:

This important agreement on civilian nuclear cooperation provides a framework for American companies, large and small, to compete to supply goods and services to the UAE in its ambitious nuclear power development. U.S. workers are well positioned to provide the highest quality, best technology to the UAE. This agreement also will ensure the highest standards of non-proliferation, safety and security for the UAE project.

Clearly, this initiative launched under the Bush Administration and strengthened by the Obama Administration fully merited the strong bi-partisan support it received in Congress. The Obama Administration called this cooperative agreement a "model for the world." I fully agree with that description.

The NAM and our member companies have been strong supporters of this pact from the start and helped promote its negotiation and approval by Congress. The NAM's Nuclear Energy Workforce (NEW) Coalition strongly supports a robust nuclear power industry. I am optimistic that our highly-qualified companies and skilled workers will compete and win business in the UAE and that this experience will help reinvigorate our own nuclear power industry and workforce here at home. We are determined to do our part to make that happen.

The National Association of Manufacturers is the nation's largest industrial trade association, representing small and large manufacturers in every industrial sector and in all 50 states. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the NAM has 10 additional offices across the country. Visit www.nam.org for more information about manufacturing and the economy.
