Parkinson Technologies

Release date: September 25, 2009

Parkinson Technologies has recently produced a new biaxially-oriented fluoropolymer (PVDF) film for Solvay Solexis. This film, successfully produced in the Parkinson in-house Marshall & Williams Plastics extrusion and orientation pilot lab facility, featured unique properties that make it ideal for use in numerous challenging applications.

"This project typifies the unique types of projects we get involved in at Parkinson Technologies," said Ken Forziati, Business Development Manager at Parkinson. "Companies come to us with challenging materials and applications because we have a well-earned reputation of working with resin manufacturers, processors, and end users to develop new products."

Solvay originally approached Parkinson in 2008 to arrange to run material trials in Parkinson's in-house lab. The Solvay material represented a challenge as most PVDF film applications are non-oriented, and the process of producing biaxially-oriented PVDF required establishing optimal processing conditions. "PVDF has a very narrow process window compared with more typical biax films such as PP and PET," said Forziati. "It's also very dense- a similar sized roll of PVDF is nearly twice as heavy as other films."

The PVDF film has unique properties, including abrasion and corrosion resistance, that make it an excellent choice for a wide variety of applications in harsh environments. Typical applications for PVDF films and resins include:

  • a fluoropolymer component of a back-sheet laminate for the photovoltaic market,
  • an alternate film for PVF applications as PVF is in short supply, and
  • (bi-oriented film) for use as a polymer capacitor
