Release date: June 29, 2009
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 29 June 2009-ASTM International Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems will meet at ASTM International Headquarters on Wednesday and Thursday, July 22 and 23.
The meeting will open with a briefing on the small UAS (sUAS) landscape from FAA and F38, and discussion on standards needed to support regulatory efforts. This is based on the recommendations of the FAA's sUAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC), which include a simplified framework for enabling self-declared conformance by sUAS manufacturers with FAA recognized consensus standards in order to obtain flight authorization. This approach should be less burdensome than traditional certification processes, and allows for regulators and the sUAS community to work together to create consensus standards. As such, this meeting of F38 will focus on ARC recommended topics such as:
Determination of takeoff and landing areas for sUAS operations, Visibility and identification markings of sUAS for commercial use, Design, construction and continued operational safety monitoring of sUAS, Maintenance and the development of maintenance manuals for sUAS, and sUAS command and control links.
In addition, standardization around optionally piloted aircraft (OPA) will be discussed.
