Peachtree City, GA, June 11, 2009: Harris is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the Patriot Award by the Arlington, Virginia-based organization named Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve. The organization is a U.S. Department of Defense organization. In an award ceremony held on June 11, 2009, Amesheia Buckner presented the award to Harris in Cordele, Georgia. "Harris is pleased to accept this award and wish to thank our employees in the Guard for their dedicated service to our country and Harris," stated Edd Berkoben, President.
The Patriot Award honors those companies that exceed their requirements under the law, and provide exceptional support of employees who are members of the Guard. For 2008, Employer Support of the Guard awarded 14,071 Patriot Awards in the U.S. with only 346 in the State of Georgia. Harris is also being considered for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Freedom Award is the U.S. Government's highest recognition given to American employers of the National Guard or Reserve members.
Two Harris employees who serve in the Guard were on hand as Harris accepted the award, Neal McMillian and Kevin Scott. Neal McMillian is recently retired after many years service. Kevin Scott is active in the National Guard and recently returned from Iraq after serving 10 months of active duty. There are 1.3 million active reservists and guardsmen in the U.S that represent 125,000 employers.
