ISA Announces Control Systems Engineer (CSE) License Now Available in New Jersey

ISA (The Instrumentation Systems & Automation Society)

Research Triangle Park, NC (22 January 2009) - ISA announced today that New Jersey now offers all Professional Engineer (PE) licensing exams with the recent edition of the New Jersey CSE licensing program. Now, all states, except Alaska, Hawaii, and Rhode Island, offer the CSE license as part of the Professional Engineering licensing program. New Jersey opened the CSE application process to applicants for exams offered in October 2008. The next exams will be offered in October 2009. Control Systems Engineering is a branch of professional engineering that requires an understanding of the science of instrumentation and the automatic control of dynamic processes. The CSE examination includes elements of electrical, mechanical, chemical, and other branches of engineering, centered on the technologies needed for feedback and feedforward control of dynamic systems. The CSE examination is one of the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams, and individuals seeking the PE designation in their respective states generally hold four year engineering degrees from approved institutions, have a minimum of four years of experience, and pass both the Fundamentals of Engineering and Practice of Engineering examinations. When asked about New Jersey adding the CSE examination, Robert Rosa, P.E., a member of the ISA North Jersey Section, stated, "Early on in my career I worked for a systems integrator and did not see the need for my PE. Many years later, my career path brought me to a consulting engineering firm. Now a PE was necessary to advance my career. Until I learned about the CSE, I thought that I would need to take the EE PE. This would mean relearning subject matter that I had not used since college. Last October, New Jersey offered, for the first time, the CSE and I was able to take a test which covered all of the material I used on the job for the last 18 years. I was thrilled when I learned that I passed. "Robert passed the exam in October 2008. ISA is the supporting Society for the Control Systems Engineering (CSE) registration process, and ISA licensed members provide testimony to State Boards. This activity is in the direct support of licensure and the competent and ethical performance of control system engineering services. "This is indeed good news for those Control Systems Engineers in New Jersey since they can now take the professional engineer examination in their field of work-control systems. The state of New Jersey's acceptance of the CSE Professional Engineer exam strengthens the profession and ISA's efforts to ensure CSEs receive the professional recognition they deserve," stated ISA Representative to the NCEES Participating Organizations Liaison Council (POLC), Gerald Wilbanks, P.E.
