Engineering Systems Inc.

Release date: November 3, 2008

Robert C. Winn, Ph.D., P.E., Principal Engineer at Engineering Systems Inc. (ESI), recently wrote an article, "Aircraft Icing for Dummies," for the fall edition of Skywritings, a newsletter published by the Defense Research Institute (DRI) Aerospace Law Committee.

The Law Committee is one of the fastest growing for DRI and members include many leaders of the Aviation Bar. The newsletter, published quarterly, focuses on a wide variety of topics and developments within the industry.

The article describes conditions under which icing can be expected to occur, gives examples of some of the ice shapes that can accrete, explains some of the possible effects of ice on an airplane, and discusses a few examples of airplane accidents that had in-flight icing as a factor.

Dr. Winn retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service. He has been with ESI since 1994. In 2002, he took over as Director of Colorado Operations for ESI's Colorado Springs office. He has published over 60 technical papers, reports and articles, and has given numerous presentations on a wide variety of technical, educational and total quality management issues. He can be reached at 719- 535-0400.

Dr. Winn is part of a large group of engineers and technicians from several ESI offices offering a wide array of expertise to the aviation industry. This technical staff can be contacted directly through the company website (www.esi-website.com).
