Smithfield, RI - Howard Leight will conduct a series of free hearing conservation seminars across the Gulf section of the US, October 21-23, 2008. Entitled, "Best Practices In Hearing Conservation," the seminars will be presented by Theresa Y. Schulz, PhD, renowned audiologist and Hearing Conservation specialist and Hearing Conservation Manager for Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC. The seminars combine audio and visual demonstrations to convey hearing conservation principles in an engaging and practical way, and are open to hearing conservation program managers, safety managers, industrial hygienists and like professionals.

In addition to a number of locations in the US, these lively and informative presentations have been offered in Canada, Mexico, the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. This October's Gulf Coast schedule will include:

o Tuesday 10/21 - Houston, TX - JW Marriott Houston

o Wednesday 10/22 - Baton Rouge, LA - Baton Rouge Marriott

o Thursday 10/23 - Mobile, AL - Marriott Mobile

The registration form for the free seminar can be downloaded at: http://www.howardleight.com/bestpractices/educate?locale=us

The seminar lasts three hours and includes everything safety practitioners need to know about implementing an effective and compliant hearing conservation program. Topics include: the basics of hearing conservation; effects of noise-induced hearing loss; US OSHA regulations; implementing an effective HC program; tips on selecting and fitting hearing protectors; field verification of hearing protectors; new EPA ratings for hearing protectors; and most important of all, training and motivating workers to wear them. Continuing educational credits for industrial hygienists and other safety professionals are pending.

The motivational portion of the seminar focuses on techniques to encourage employees to wear their hearing protection: showing workers they are vulnerable; demonstrating the future risks of not wearing hearing protection; and removing the barriers to wearing protectors, including unavailability, discomfort, or a sense of alienation from being overprotected. All attendees will receive posters, flyers, product samples and other motivational tools for use in their own hearing conservation programs.

Demonstrations of VeriPRO(TM), a new technology just introduced by Howard Leight which measures realworld attenuation of unmodified earplugs, will be offered immediately following the seminars.

Dr. Theresa Y. Schulz began her career in Hearing Conservation as an audiologist for the U.S. Army and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Colonel in 2004. She is a Certified Professional Supervisor for Audiometric Monitoring (CPS/A), a certified member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and a fellow in the American Academy of Audiology. Theresa joined Sperian Hearing Protection in May of 2008.
