On August 21, 2008, California legislature gave final stamp of approval to NEMA-endorsed legislation (SB 1386) to require installation of carbon monoxide devices in all dwelling units intended for human occupancy, including homes, apartments, and hotels. By enacting SB 1386, California will become 3rd state this year to codify CO protection, joining Wisconsin and North Carolina. Currently, 17 states and numerous localities have some type of CO requirement.

ROSSLYN, Va., August 24, 2008- On August 21, 2008, the California legislature gave its final stamp of approval to NEMA-endorsed legislation (SB 1386) to require the installation of carbon monoxide (CO) devices in all dwelling units intended for human occupancy, including homes, apartments, and hotels. The bill will now be sent to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for his signature into law.
"This is an important win for California residents and visitors," NEMA President & CEO Evan R. Gaddis said. "By requiring the installation of CO devices in places where people live and sleep, California is demonstrating its commitment to promoting life safety. A win in a state like California will spur other states to enact similar protections for their residents."
By enacting SB 1386, California will become the third state this year to codify CO protection, joining Wisconsin and North Carolina. Currently, 17 states and numerous localities have some type of CO requirement on the books.
