ANSI Joins DHS in Support of National Preparedness Month

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Release date: August 21, 2008

Homeland Security Standards Panel Conference to Focus on Private Sector Preparedness New York August 21, 2008

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is joining forces with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the fifth consecutive year to support National Preparedness Month. Held each September, National Preparedness Month highlights the importance of emergency preparedness for families and companies across the nation.

More than 2,500 organizations have joined the National Preparedness Month Coalition to involve community members in emergency preparedness, planning, and response. The month will focus on critical steps for preparedness, including creating an emergency supply kit; making a family emergency plan; being informed of best practices in case of an emergency; and getting involved in community emergency planning.

As a partnering organization in National Preparedness Month, the ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) will host its seventh annual Plenary meeting on October 2, 2008, at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 2008 Plenary will address Public Law 110-53, The Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act of 2007, specifically Title IX on the Voluntary Certification Program for Private Sector Preparedness. [see related article]

Plenary organizers have announced that Dennis Schrader, deputy administrator of national preparedness for the DHS Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will deliver the keynote address. The FEMA National Preparedness Directorate (NPD) provides strategy, policy, and planning guidance to build prevention, protection, and recovery capabilities. Mr. Schrader will highlight the work of the NPD, as well as DHS's role in implementing the Title IX program as designated by the PL 110-53 legislation.

The latest Plenary agenda is now available for download and review. Emily Walker, former 9/11 Commission staff, will provide introductory remarks on the impetus for the original Commission recommendation that was included in the PL 110-53 legislation. Panel sessions will address in depth key aspects of the Title IX program, including the standards under consideration, the envisioned accreditation/certification program, and the business case for the voluntary certification. As October is National Cyber Security Awareness month, a final session will be devoted to the subject of cyber security and the accomplishments of the standards community.

Advance registration is required by September 15, 2008. Register online, or download a registration form. Information on sponsorship opportunities, registration fees, and further details are available on the ANSI-HSSP Plenary website.
