In Radio Interview, Reichert Says U.S. Should Not Retreat From New Trade Agreements
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 22 - On this week's "America's Business with Mike Hambrick" radio program and vodcast, Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) says the United States should not become "isolationist" and not approve pending trade deals with Colombia, Panama and South Korea. Free and fair trade agreements boost the economy, create jobs, and give the United States more influence in shaping the global economy, Reichert says.

Reichert is one of the staunchest supporters of free and fair trade in Congress. He explains why:
"Well, there's a number of reasons. And especially I think it's good for the country first of all. If you want to focus just first on the state of Washington, the northwest, trade is responsible for one out of every three jobs in Washington State. And so we are very dependent upon producing our products and growing our crops in Washington State and then having a trade relationship with countries around the world. In Washington, Japan of course is our No. 1 trade partner. And China is one of our most important trade partners, too. And we're looking to build a bigger and stronger relationship with China. The United States has a trading deficit with China and Washington State has a trade surplus with China. And we're kind of proud of that."
Reichert says forging trade ties with new countries gives the United States a stake in setting global economic policy:
"We are in a global economy. I think most people recognize that. There is no going back now. We shouldn't go to this isolationist view. We should move forward. And what we should be doing as a country is focusing on how we as Americans define the global economy. We should be leading the way in defining what it looks like for two reasons. Number one to protect this country. Number two to protect American jobs. And create more American jobs."
