Comprised of members from ISO, IEC, and ITU, Joint Video Team Standards Committee has been chosen to receive Emmy Award for work on High Profile capability for MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding, also known as H.264. MPEG-4 AVC gives guidelines for video compression at high quality, with bit rates that are much lower than those of previous standards. High Profile capability is applicable to broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly for HDTV applications.
The Joint Video Team Standards Committee (JVT) - comprised of members from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - has been chosen to receive an Emmy Award for its work on the High Profile capability for MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC), also known as H.264.
MPEG-4 AVC, part of a suite of MPEG-4 standards related to multimedia, gives guidelines for video compression at a high quality, with bit rates that are much lower than those of previous standards. The High Profile capability of the standard is applicable to broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly for high-definition (HD) television applications such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
JVT was formed in 2001 by the Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), which is comprised of the members of Working Group 11 of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Information Technology, Subcommittee (SC) 29, Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) holds the secretariat to ISO/IEC JTC 1.
The ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrator to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 is the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.
This award marks the second time that ISO and IEC have been honored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 1996, JTC 1/SC 29 received an Emmy for International Standardization of JPEG, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.
"On behalf of the U.S. standards community, ANSI congratulates the JVT Standards Committee for its valuable contribution to the entertainment industry," said S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. "This award is a testament not only to the quality of MPEG standardization efforts, but also to the successful working relationship of literally hundreds of organizations and companies from around the world."
