Bayer MaterialScience, LLC

Release date: June 25, 2008

Bayer MaterialScience Examines Coating Formulation Chemistry for Demanding Industrial Market Applications

2K waterborne polyurethane coatings for the industrial market:

Pittsburgh, June 25, 2008 - Their high level of performance and low levels of VOCs make two-component (2K) waterborne polyurethane coatings well-suited for countless coatings applications in a number of demanding industrial markets. Bayer MaterialScience LLC (BMS) Senior R&D Scientist Raymond Stewart examined the chemical systems used in the formulation of coatings for two industrial market areas: agricultural construction equipment (ACE) and commercial vehicle markets, and flooring and general concrete surfaces, in his poster presentation: Waterborne Coatings for the Industrial Market-The Time is Now! Stewart presented the poster at the recent 2008 American Coatings Show and Conference in Charlotte, N.C.

Coatings for both the ACE/commercial vehicle and flooring/general concrete surfaces markets must meet common performance requirements for abrasion and chemical resistance, although specific tests differ in methodology according to industry standards. Some general features of user-friendly 2K waterborne polyurethane coatings chemistry include low VOCs, toughness, chemical resistance and versatility in formulation, application and performance. However, careful selection of both polyol and polyisocyanate components is required to make formulations that meet varying coating specifications.

"By varying their formulation, 2K waterborne polyurethane coatings can be specified to meet a variety of critical performance needs for the industrial coatings market, including low emissions, low odor and durability, as well as abrasion, chemical, graffiti and hot tire resistance," said Stewart. "Bayer's extensive line of polyols and polyisocyanates can provide the utmost in formulation flexibility, resulting in reliable, high performance polyurethane coatings."

In his presentation, Stewart described some key performance features of properly formulated 2K waterborne polyurethane coatings to meet the needs of the ACE/commercial vehicle market segments, including gloss, hardness, solvent content and oil and UV-resistance. He also provided testing data on the graffiti-resistant properties of a 2K waterborne polyurethane clearcoat formulation.

"Because of their flexibility and performance characteristics, 2K waterborne polyurethanes can be considered a chemistry of choice for the industrial market," concluded Stewart.
