Press Release

Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST)

Release date: March 4, 2008

Kavlico's Flight Spoiler Control Lever (FSCL) is Flight Qualified for Aircraft Cockpit Use

MOORPARK, Calif. - Kavlico, an operation of Schneider Electric and global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) is pleased to announce that it has a qualified Flight Spoiler Control Lever (FSCL). Phil Roessler, Senior Program Manager at Kavlico states "This is a natural value-added proposition to our existing RVDT product line". The FSCL is a Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) suitable for use in all type of aircraft cockpits.

Features include:
4-Channel RVDT position feedback
Locked stow
Gate preventing inadvertent movement into emergency position
210,00 movement cycles tested
Meets relevant aspects of FAR25 and RTCA-160
Integrated dampner prevents intermediate position migration
9 soft detents
LED illuminated front panel (LRU)
50,000 flight hour MTBF
Simple 4 screw mount permits rapid line replacement

Many new aircraft are using electromechanical pilot input devices in the cockpit to save weight. By using 4 integrated RVDT channels, the need for mechanical cables is completely eliminated.

The FSCL is on the front-end of the fly-by-wire concept. By moving the handle, the position is sensed by the integral RVDTs. The signal then travels to the flight control computer which commands the multi-function spoilers to change to the pilot's selected position. Since the outputs from the RVDT channels are so precise, a pilot with minimal effort can easily select an accurate spoiler position. To allow movement of the handle from the locked stow position, the button is depressed.

Kavlico employed the latest finite element mechanical design techniques to achieve the lowest possible weight for this device. Particular attention was paid to the redundant 4-channel design including two separate connectors to achieve added reliability.
