A new edition of one of the world's most recognizable standards - ISO 9001: Quality management systems - Guidelines for performance improvements - is being submitted for voting as a Final Draft International Standard. According to today's announcement from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this revised version is expected to be published in the October or November of 2008, pending formal approval by ISO membership.
ISO 9001 details requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS), which is a framework for an organization to control its processes in order to achieve objectives including customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and continual improvement.
According to ISO's rules for the development of International Standards, published documents are required to undergo periodic review to determine if any revisions or maintenance are needed, or if a given standard should be withdrawn.
Revisions introduced in ISO 9001:2008 are minimal and focus on fine-tuning. The intent of the most recent version of the document, ISO 9001:2000, has not been changed, and no additional requirements are included. The 2008 edition will be the fourth version of the standard, which was first published in 1987.
The draft International Standard was approved at the May 19-23 meeting of ISO Technical Committee (TC) 176, Quality management and quality assurance. TC 176 is the developer of 17 standards on quality management supporting tools, including ISO 9001:2000. The U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrator to TC 176 is the American Society for Quality (ASQ), an accredited standards developer and member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
To accompany the publication of the new edition, ISO is developing several new documents: an implementation guide for ISO 9001:2008; a reference table comparing and contrasting ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008; and answers to Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, ISO is collaborating with the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) concerning accredited certification.
