Press Release

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Release date: June 18, 2008

ANSI Signs MoU for Partnership in Greenhouse Gas Accreditation Program

As part of its continuing commitment to developing an accreditation program for greenhouse gas (GHG) verification bodies (VBs), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Climate Registry (TCR).

TCR sets consistent and transparent standards for the calculation, verification, and public reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout North America in a single unified registry. TCR is a non-profit organization that supports both voluntary and mandatory GHG reporting programs and provides meaningful information to reduce GHG emissions.

In the first initiative of this agreement, ANSI and TCR commit to jointly coordinate and implement a pilot program for the accreditation of GHG VBs. This program will evaluate the competency of candidate VBs against the international standards dictated in ISO 14065, Greenhouse gases - Requirements for greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies for use in accreditation or other forms of recognition. Organizations will also be appraised against TCR's Guidance on Accreditation for Verification Bodies and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF)'s document on the application of ISO 14065.

Through ongoing assessments, ANSI will ensure that VBs continue to follow the guidelines set for accreditation and meet all necessary competency requirements for TCR.

"We're proud to partner with The Climate Registry on this important initiative," said Lane Hallenbeck, vice president of accreditation services for ANSI. "Already we've received nearly seventy applications to join the pilot GHG accreditation program, a clear indication that organizations nationwide recognize the importance of monitoring greenhouse gas emissions and the value that ANSI accreditation brings to the process."
