EDL Packaging Engineers, Inc.

Release date: June 16, 2008

"EDL provides technologies and engineering to configure systems that meet special and often unique customer requirements. We listen, study, design and deliver value." EDL's Forming Shoe System We used to say "Don't talk to us about Horizontal/Forming Shoe Wrappers"! Well, we've changed our minds! Now don't think we've lost our minds or that we've decided to compete in the total "Horizontal Wrapper" market.

In keeping with EDL traditions, a prospective customers informed us of Problems they were having wrapping random length products, we decided that we could Help and Developed Solutions using "Forming Shoe/Horizontal Wrapping" technology.

As you may know EDL markets, engineers and manufactures roll wrapping systems with seal jaws up to 144 inches in length. These systems have typically been configured to wrap rolls wide edge leading and are very efficient at handling varying or random diameters. Example applications would include carpet and carpet padding where the width of the material is consistent but the yardage, and subsequent diameter varies at random. A significant shortcoming of these systems is that they lose efficiency in applications where the diameters are more consistent but the 'length' (width of rolled material) varies.

In listening to prospective customers, we determined that Forming Shoe type systems were not available with the level of ruggedness and design flexibility that is required for these products, which are often up to 2000 lbs or more. Additionally, systems for these applications often require full integration with upstream and downstream equipment including automatic winders, labeling systems and robotic palletizers. Finally, these applications often require material handling systems or transfer conveyors which are customized to the particular product being run.

Example projects completed with these Forming Shoe solutions include;

o Rolled Commercial Roofing material in lengths from 72" to 240" and weights up to 2500 lbs. In this application, the number of yards of material, the make-up of the material itself and subsequently the diameter of the rolls were consistent within a run but the customer needed to package all widths of the material in a run. This system was configured with 3 forming shoes that could be quickly changed out by utilizing the integrated film roll hoist. This solution also included a roll accumulation system, online inkjet coding, conveyors and integration with a pick and place robot.

o Strips of expansion joint material used in concrete industry. This product is particularly dirty, tacky and subject to flaking, which had caused havoc with previous equipment not appropriate for the product weight and environment. Again, the nature of the production process was such that the width and height of the stacks, and subsequently the circumference around the pack, was consistent but the lengths would change dramatically and at random.

This was a relatively simple machine with the key benefit to the customer being the fact that EDL designed and constructed the machine to suit their harsh environment and product handling characteristics.

EDL still does and will continue to implement solutions using the wide-edge leading concept where it is most appropriate. The Forming Shoe system allows us to offer a more complete range of solutions for different applications and product. Future developments that are anticipated include systems with multiple forming shoes and film widths that will automatically index based on dimensions of random product being fed to the system.

Bring us your application and let us apply our Innovative Solutions! Remember we listen, study, design and deliver value to our customers!
