Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Server Management Specifications to Bevel Gears

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Release date: April 22, 2008

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Server Management Specifications Modern computer servers must support a diverse range of end-user needs, from hosting simple office suites to complex database applications. An equally diverse range of server management programs are currently available on the market, requiring IT administrators to manipulate their chosen program for their specific needs - often a complex and difficult task.

ANSI INCITS 438-2008, Information technology - Server Management Command Line Protocol (SM CLP) Specification, a recently released standard from ANSI accredited standards developer and organizational member the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS), will help IT administrators to manage diverse server environments.

CLP is a command/response protocol which uses text messaging technology to translate data between a server and its various programs. ANSI INCITS 438-2008, intended to guide developers and system administrators implementing SM CLP, may be applied to any transport protocol capable of carrying command/response message data.

The new standard unifies the management of multi-vendor servers by providing a common command language for key server management tasks. ANSI INCITS 438-2008 also enables the development of common scripts to increase data center automation, which can help significantly reduce management costs.

Bevel Gears Mechanical gears, which have "teeth" that allow rotational force to be transferred at various speeds, torques and directions, have existed since the 18th century. Bevel gears, identified by the cone shape of the "teeth," are used in locomotives, automobiles, printing presses, power plants, steel plants and numerous other applications.

A new standard from ANSI member and accredited standards developer the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) will ensure that bevel gears are assembled correctly to protect employees in the factory and service personnel in the field. ANSI/AGMA 2008-C01, Assembling Bevel Gears, provides definitions, explanations, and instructions directed toward the physical appearance of the gears as they are inspected and assembled by factory and service personnel.

The standard applies to the assembly of all bevel gears including straight, spiral, and hypoid gear designs. ANSI/AGMA 2008-C01 provides a better understanding of the need for correct positioning of bevel gears, and gives the information necessary for correct assembly and positioning of bevel gears in their respective housings. In addition, the document offers detailed assembly procedures for specific applications; information for equipping an assembly department with the needed tools and gages; and instruction for obtaining, interpreting, and adjusting tooth contact patterns.
