The National Association of Chemical Distributors' (NACD) December 2008 Annual Meeting - with the theme of You Are the Difference - will examine sustainability, the economy, and continuous improvement - building on the successful results achieved through the NACD Responsible Distribution ProcessSM.
Keynote speaker Dan Esty, co-author of Green to Gold - How Smart Companies Use Environmental Strategy to Innovate, Create Value, and Build Competitive Advantage, will examine what businesses are doing around the world to more effectively incorporate environmental strategies into their work and practical steps businesses can take to become more competitive in this business climate.
Another keynoter, Alan Beaulieu, Institute for Trend Research (ITRŪ), will offer an economic outlook for the chemical industry and other key industries for the U.S. and abroad, addressing such issues as how China's and India's growth impacts the U.S. and the new Administration's potential impact on the economy.
Prevalent throughout all NACD meetings is a focus on the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM (RDP), the member-voted condition of membership in the Association requiring members to continuously improve performance in the environment, health, safety, and security. The results of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2006 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Public Data Release Report shows the average release per non-NACD facility was almost 24 percent higher than the average release per NACD member facility. Concern about their environmental impact is not new to NACD member companies. In all nine years of TRI reporting, the chemical distribution industry has recorded the lowest toxic chemical releases of any other reporting industry. This most recent TRI report also shows that the chemical distribution industry released the lowest amount of toxic emissions in its reporting history, clearly demonstrating that NACD members have succeeded in improving their environmental performance.
Since 1991, NACD member companies have been committed to continuous improvement in the responsible management of chemicals through RDP's eight Guiding Principles. In these Guiding Principles, environmental concerns are covered from the beginning stages of a products lifecycle, as in Guiding Principle #2 - "To make health, safety, security, and environmental considerations a priority in planning for all existing and new operations, products, processes, and facilities," and throughout the process, including the governing laws and regulations, as in Guiding Principle #7 - "To participate with government and others in creating responsible laws, regulations, and practices to safeguard the community, workplace, and environment."
NACD's 37th Annual Meeting will be held at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, AZ, December 1-5, 2008.
NACD and its more than 250 members have established themselves as leaders in health, safety, security, and environmental performance through implementation of the Responsible Distribution Process (RDP), established in 1991 as a condition of membership in NACD. Incorporated as a condition of membership in January 1999, NACD members undergo third-party on-site RDPV - RDP Verification. For additional information, visit NACD's Web site - http://www.nacd.com.
