UWB Gaining Ground in Healthcare Real-Time Location System (RTLS) Market

Orlando, Florida - February 25, 2008 - Time Domain Corporation (http://www.timedomain.com/), a leader in precision ultra wideband (UWB) real-time location systems (RTLS), today demonstrated its Precision Location Ultra Wideband System (PLUS) product line at the HIMSS08 healthcare conference and exhibition (Booth # 2377). PLUS, which employs Time Domain's patented UWB technology, enables RTLS solutions to move from an "approximate presence" technology to a solution that precisely locates and monitors the interaction of people and assets for a host of new healthcare applications. PLUS can read thousands of small, active RFID tags per second through multiple walls with a precision of 12-36 inches.

UWB technology significantly improves the management of assets through accurate real-time monitoring and location information. In the healthcare market, this can increase asset utilization, staff efficiency, and workflow; definitively link an asset to a business process for auditing or compliance; improve billing accuracy, and reduce leasing, service and capital equipment expenses.

The key to PLUS' precision and high-tag throughput is the company's 6.4 GHz ultra wideband pulse-based technology. Unlike other RFID RTLS technologies such as UHF, Zigbee and Wi-Fi, ultra wideband active tags emit a burst of extremely short pulses once a second which, when read and processed by a time difference of arrival (TDOA) algorithm, provides inches of accuracy in 2-D and multi-floor environments. This short pulse approach also provides precise location accuracy in "noisy" indoor environments where wiring and metal fixtures are often problematic for other RTLS systems.

"PLUS solves the problem of locating and accurately linking healthcare staff, patients and equipment in a single room," said Greg Clawson, vice president of sales and marketing, Time Domain Corporation. "This capability opens new opportunities for our partners to create location-based services that provide real-time, integrated patient safety, billing and equipment monitoring solutions. The goal is to increase bed turnover and reduce the amount of time a patient spends in the healthcare facility, while ensuring high quality, safe care."

First customer deployments of PLUS include, Washington Hospital Center, a not-for-profit 926-bed acute care teaching and research hospital based in Washington, D.C. The PLUS system, sold and integrated by Parco Wireless as part of their Précis System, is providing a comprehensive equipment location and monitoring system in the hospital's emergency department. Nesconset Nursing Center, a 240-bed facility based in Nesconset, NY, is using PLUS to locate patients, staff and equipment within the special care facility for Alzheimer's patients and other related disorders. The system is being integrated by Sysgen Data Ltd. using Précis middleware. Additional beta applications of PLUS include precision monitoring of manufacturing work in process, retail customer behavior and high-value assets.

Time Domain recently added the first eleven partners to its global channel reseller network of PLUS(TM) ultra wideband solutions providers. Together with AeroScout, Inc. the company also announced the first dual-mode UWB and Wi-Fi RTLS solution. Named Ultra-Wi-Fi, the new product combines the precision location, high tag capacity and real-time data of UWB with the ease of deployment across large facilities of Wi-Fi-based location, for a multitude of asset monitoring and management applications.
