Radiant Optics Introduces Infrared Heating Thermometric Design Service

New thermal comfort solution design service takes the guesswork out of IR heater selection and placement

Woodinville, WA-February 21, 2008-Radiant Optics, Inc., manufacturer of the HotZone(TM) family of high intensity infrared heaters, featuring the lobster-eye inspired IRLens(TM), today announced the introduction of a Thermometric Design Service to assist infrared heating solution designers in selecting, positioning and aiming infrared heaters to provide the temperature increase desired by their customers.

Said Neil Crocker, Radiant Optics' president and CEO, "Selling Radiant Optics products often involves assisting customers with selecting the right heater and deciding on the location and orientation of each unit. Historically, such design considerations are handled using the Design Guides available on the Radiant Optics website. We have developed a design methodology that employs standard lighting design software to simulate the performance of our HotZone(TM) infrared heaters. Mathematical models describing the heat patterns produced by the heaters are initially fed into the software. Next, the room or environment that requires heating is drawn using standard CAD tools, and the selected heaters are positioned within that space, at any height and orientation desired. We can predict the amount of energy that arrives at any surface, properly accounting for the superposition of heat from multiple heaters and effects related to distance and orientation. Then we generate diagrams that indicate projected temperature gains by means of isotherm contour lines."

Continued Crocker, "The infrared heating industry is somewhat plagued by vague performance promises and "rule of thumb" design methods that often leave customers feeling too cold or too hot and disappointed. Radiant Optics has always provided accurate heater performance data to allow solution designers to get it right. Automating the process is just the next step and a step the lighting industry took years ago. At this time, we can only do computer aided designs with our HotZone(TM) heaters, but look forward to the day when other infrared heater manufacturers are willing to accurately measure the performance of their infrared heaters and provide that data in a format that can be used in Thermometric Design software."

Said Roger Johnson, Radiant Optics' founder and chief engineer, "It is hard to overemphasize the usefulness of our new Thermometric Design Service. The people who have participated in our pilot program wonder how they ever managed without it." Johnson predicts that in the future, heating designers nationwide will adopt the method pioneered by Radiant Optics. "By using these tools, designers will finally be able to apply radiant heating principles in a manner analogous to lighting design."

About Radiant Optics, Inc. Radiant Optics designs and manufactures HotZone(TM) high intensity gas and electric infrared spot heaters for applications as diverse as ice and snow melting to restaurant patio heating. All of Radiant Optics' infrared heaters feature the lobster-eye inspired and patented IRLens(TM) that focuses the infrared energy into a narrow beam resulting in more heat being delivered to the target and/or allowing heaters to be mounted farther from the target. Radiant Optics is located in Woodinville, Washington and all HotZone(TM) heaters are manufactured in the USA.
