Press Release

Simrit, A Div. Of Freudenberg-NOK

Release date: February 20, 2008

Simrit Demonstrates Active Elastomeric Encoder Technology at IFPE 2008

Technology Specialist exhibits active speed, position sensing encoders for various applications

PLYMOUTH, Mich., Feb. 20, 2008 - To demonstrate its expertise in encoder design and development, Simrit - the industrial sealing products division of Freudenberg-NOK and global supplier of elastomeric seals and custom molded products - will exhibit its Active Elastomeric Encoders at the 2008 International Exposition for Power Transmission (IFPE).

Active Elastomeric Encoders, also known as Multi-Pole Magnetic Encoders, are used in engine crankshaft, camshaft, axle and transmission applications to accurately monitor the speed, timing and position of a system.

Simrit's design utilizes a proprietary formulation of a ferrite loaded polymer that is molded in a desired geometric shape and magnetized to a specified pole pair configuration. The ferrite material provides an alternating north and south magnetic field, which is read by a sensing element. Technology on the sensor provides a digital output signal to the vehicle controller, which in turn uses the information to precisely control a given system.

Simrit's Active Elastomeric Encoders offer the following benefits:

o Compact packaging - integrates the magnet into the encoder, rather than in a large sensor, allowing for compact design and component integration;

o Air gap sensitivity - provides significantly larger air gaps (greater than 3 mm), while maintaining complete functionality and minimizing the effects of misalignment and air gap variation;

o Consistent signal quality - maintains a consistent signal at all speeds with no loss in quality;

o Zero speed detection - provides a constant digital output down to zero speed;

o Cost effectiveness - integration allows for the reduction of parts, as well as simpler installation and serviceability;

o Simple assembly - due to technology integration and modular sub-system design, many components can be assembled in one step; and

o Flexibility - can be magnetized in any pole pair configuration, allowing the technology to be used for antilock braking systems and engine modules.

Additionally, Simrit's encoders are chemically resistant to typical application fluids, including engine, transmission, axle and general lubricating oil, fuel, degreaser, road de-icer, brake fluid, anti-freeze and power steering fluid, and offer a high temperature physical resistance of up to 170 degrees Celsius (340 degrees Fahrenheit) with a magnetic resistance of up to 250 degrees Celsius (480 degrees Fahrenheit).

Product engineers interested in additional information can visit the Simrit booth (#S-14005) at IFPE 2008, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from March 11 - 15. Interested media attendees can register to attend the Simrit press event on Wednesday, March 12 from 3 to 4 p.m. in room N249-251. Please see editor's note for R.S.V.P. information.

The Simrit Division is based at Freudenberg-NOK's headquarters in Plymouth, Mich. and is part of the Freudenberg and NOK Group, which has total annual sales of more than $12 billion. Simrit offers an extensive portfolio of sealing solutions for the industrial, aerospace, appliance, diesel engine, marine, off-highway equipment, oil and gas, recreational vehicle and semiconductor markets.
