PJM's Capacity Auction Shows Competitive Power Suppliers Are Responding to Meet Future Needs

"Competitive power suppliers responded to PJM's forward capacity auction to contribute to a record increase in the amount of generation available to meet consumers needs."

WASHINGTON, D.C. - John E. Shelk, president and CEO of the Electric Power Supply Association (EPSA) issued the following statement in response to todays announcement by the PJM Interconnection of the results of its fourth residual auction for capacity for planning year June 2010 through May 2011:

"Todays PJM auction results show that competitive wholesale markets and power suppliers are responding to the need for more electricity, efficiency and reliability. Competitive power suppliers responded to PJM's forward capacity auction to contribute to a record increase in the amount of generation available to meet consumers' needs. This is a significant response by competitive power suppliers, which was facilitated by the market signals that the capacity auction helped provide. Competitive power suppliers continue to improve the environment, enhance reliability, empower consumers and advance innovation."

PJM coordinates and directs the reliability of the electrical system that serves 51 million people in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
