American Institute of Architects

Release date: October 23, 2007

Washington, D.C., October 23, 2007 - The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the election of David A. Thurm to serve as Public Director from the close of the 2007 annual meeting of the Board of Directors until the close of its 2009 annual meeting. In this capacity, he will offer insights on information technology, the media and strategic planning. Mr. Thurm has had a notable career with The New York Times where he is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

"With his vast client experience on numerous distinguished, award-winning buildings, David Thurm has contributed significantly to advancing the profession of architecture through his support of design as a catalyst for improving work environments," said AIA EVP/CEO, Christine McEntee. "Additionally, he has promoted the innovative use, testing and procurement of materials that have had a dramatic effect on the building industry, and we consider him to be a valuable asset to our organization."

In addition to being selected as one of two non-architects - public members - on the Board of the American Institute of Architects, he also sits on the executive committee and board of the Architectural League of New York and the advisory board of the Center for Architecture, and he was elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects, New York State chapter, in 2006.

"I'm pleased and honored to have this opportunity to work with the AIA," said David Thurm. "Architects are uniquely situated to have a significant effect not only on the built environment, but also on the way buildings can improve the way we work and live. I hope to contribute to this important discussion."

During his career at The New York Times, Mr. Thurm has worked with some of the prominent architects of our time. In each case he has encouraged innovative approaches to spatial design, building technology and project delivery from project teams.

About The American Institute of Architects For 150 years, members of The American Institute of Architects have worked with each other and their communities to create more valuable, healthy, secure, and sustainable buildings and cityscapes.
