Redemtech

Release date: October 24, 2007

Redemtech Hires Industry Veteran to Lead Environmental Advisory Practice

Mejia to Play a Key Role in Expanding Redemtech's Technology Recycling Program Offerings

Columbus, Ohio (October 24, 2007) - Redemtech (www.redemtech.com), a leading provider of Technology Change Management (TCM) and IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) services, announced it has hired Jim Mejia as vice president of environmental affairs to lead its Environmental Advisory Practice. The practice provides assessment and consulting services to customers pertaining to environmental sustainability and electronics recycling.

"Many companies invest millions of dollars in technology but sometimes lack the experience or processes to ensure they are taking the right steps to properly dispose of or recycle their electronic equipment in a truly sustainable way," said Bob Houghton, president of Redemtech. "Jim Mejia's experience will play a critical role in Redemtech's mission to deliver a much greener, more accountable solution for the environmentally responsible management of electronic waste (e-waste)."

Mejia, who has more than 30 years experience in the environmental field, joins Redemtech from Los Angeles-based Electric Partners Corporation, where he was a co-founder and vice president and chief engineer since 2003. As president for Metal Management, Mejia was able to bring the Los Angeles non-ferrous scrap processing subsidiary back to profitability. He has also served in a number of technology and leadership capacities in the air-water-soil treatment, copper, aluminum, lead and brass smelter industries.

"I'm excited to be part of an organization like Redemtech, which is a leader in environmentally responsible approaches to IT asset management, whether that's extending equipment lifecycles, increasing reutilization, or safely disposing of obsolete equipment," Mejia said. "I look forward to helping Redemtech continue to lead the industry, especially as this market continues to grow and as more enterprise organizations demand environmentally sustainable business practices."

A significant milestone in Mejia's career is his invention and engineering of an automated e-waste mechanical conversion facility, which has been featured on PBS and the History Channel. The facility's e-waste conversion process, the only process of its type approved and funded by the State of California, separates low-value e-waste to scrap metal commodities and polymers.

Priorities for Environmental Practice

Houghton added that Mejia's experience will be pivotal in furthering Redemtech's Environmental Practice, which is responsible for the company's Environmental Management System. This includes vetting of downstream material handling and recycling processes to ensure compliance with Redemtech's stringent policies against the landfill, export or incineration of e-waste.

According to Houghton, corporate generators of e-waste are often unaware of the common industry practice of exporting the material to developing countries where environmental laws are either non-existent or not enforced. "Most global corporations would be horrified to discover that their e-waste ends up in a landfill somewhere in a developing world rather than properly recycled. Redemtech has made a commitment to zero landfill, export and incineration of e-waste through the signing of The Electronics Recycler's Pledge of True Stewardship and by designing an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System to significantly exceed legal requirements."

Redemtech's Environmental Practice also helps businesses extend equipment lifecycles and manage inventory in a way that enables reuse where appropriate. This allows organizations to maximize utilization of the technology they already have, thereby reducing the amount of new technology they need to buy, all while improving return on investment in IT systems. In addition, this practice helps organizations implement true environmental stewardship programs that track the equipment through the entire recycling process. Environmental policy aligned with business processes can aid regulatory compliance and help avoid costly public relations problems.

Houghton noted that the Environmental Practice is in the process of developing an e-waste management reporting system to complement Redemtech's advanced asset management reporting system to provide additional environmental support for its customers. Once complete, customers will have a better perspective of how their e-waste systems support environmental stewardship initiatives.

"It's imperative that sustainable organizations continually look at new environmental management and electronic recycling programs that fully support true environmental stewardship," Mejia added. "Current industry practices are just not accountable enough or clean enough to serve an increasingly sophisticated marketplace."
