Comneon and Sonus Networks Bring Next-Generation Mobile Services to Global Markets

NUREMBERG, Germany and WESTFORD, Mass., Oct. 17 - Comneon GmbH, a leading supplier of advanced software solutions for mobile communication handsets, and Sonus Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:SONS), a leading supplier of service provider IP-voice infrastructure solutions, today announced that they will join forces in developing, testing and provisioning some of the most advanced consumer-ready mobile services in the world. The new solution will leverage the widely renowned IP Multimedia System (IMS) architecture that is being adopted by many operators globally to deliver advance services to consumers.

Both Sonus Networks and Comneon have been recognized for their leading IMS capabilities, which will provide significant value to operators as they deploy this end-to-end IMS architecture and deliver the latest features to their customers. Comneon's leading IMS Device Framework is a mature and well-tested IMS client that is openly available on the market. Sonus' IMS network solutions are already deployed world-wide carrying billions of minutes of production traffic each month.

Two of the first IMS services to be delivered are IP-Voice for mobile networks and Voice Call Continuity (VCC), a service that allows seamless roaming between operator controlled mobile and open WiFi networks. VCC is the key enabler for Fixed-Mobile-Convergence (FMC) offerings.

"The growth of fixed broadband networks, with penetration reaching over 60% of households in many markets, and the increasing popularity of a mobile device in place of a fixed-line phone indicates a burgeoning opportunity for FMC," said Philip Solis, principal analyst at ABI Research. "VCC-based solutions will provide service ubiquity, lower costs and greater simplicity as users do not have to select a different service provider for each use case scenario."

"Joining forces with Comneon, we are able to provide our customers with an immediate time-to-market benefit by offering a complete end-to-end IMS solution with presence, IM, group list management, and rich call functionality integration," said John Nye, Vice President, Applications, Sonus Networks. "The availability of a pre-integrated and pre-tested end-to-end solution for the IMS network and client side will reduce the risk for operators and terminal manufacturers that are offering IMS-based services."

"We are pleased to reinforce our cooperation with Sonus Networks. While bringing an essential element into the joint offering, our best-in-class IMS Device Framework will benefit from Sonus Networks' vast expertise on server side provisioning as well as established operator relationships," said Dr. Christian Mucke, Managing Director of Comneon.

Comneon has gained several years of experience in IMS solutions for mobile handsets. Its Device Framework has been designed in connection with its participation in the 3GPP and OMA standardization processes and is now the leading "true" layered IMS architecture for mobile phones and has been proven in interoperability tests. Comneon has steadily enhanced its IMS Device Framework so that it fully complies with 3GPP standard releases. It also integrates a large number of applications for flexible, cost-efficient and future-proof deployments, while bringing new promising revenue opportunities to operators. These applications include Presence, Group and List management, Push to Talk, Instant Messaging and multiparty Chat, CSI services with Video Sharing Rich Call functionalities, with other features and functionalities in development.

Sonus is a recognized leader in the IP-Voice market with solutions that support wireline and wireless architectures. Already deployed in more than 50 countries, Sonus' solution is one of the world's first IMS architectures that is field-proven in leading operators today. In addition to FMC solutions for dual- and multi-mode handsets, Sonus currently offers operators the ability to expand their converged services offering thorough support of an end-to-end IP- based femtocell architecture. Its applications platform, IMX, supports the rapid integration of services, including third party applications like those offered by Comneon, into operators' networks.
