Freescale Semiconductor

Release date: October 10, 2007

Alliance strengthens AUTOSAR-compliant software solution for Freescale's industry-leading 16- and 32-bit automotive microcontrollers AUTOSAR Signature Graphic

BADEN-BADEN, Germany (International VDI Congress) - Oct. 10, 2007 - Faced with soaring software content in automotive system designs and ever tighter development deadlines, automotive engineers look to AUTOSAR-compliant software as a way to manage rising system complexity. Addressing this challenge, Freescale has introduced AUTOSAR-compliant software for electronic control units (ECUs) that use Freescale's 16-bit S12X and 32-bit Power Architecture(TM) microcontrollers (MCUs).

Freescale has collaborated with Elektrobit (EB) to market and deliver its AUTOSAR software bundled with EB tresos Studio, a user-friendly configuration framework for AUTOSAR-compliant automotive software. The combined software offering Freescale's and EB's AUTOSAR software integrated within the EB tresos Studio configuration framework targets automotive body, chassis, safety and powertrain applications.

"Freescale is helping drive standardization of automotive software by bringing this comprehensive, AUTOSAR-compliant solution to market," said Mike McCourt, vice president and general manager of Freescale's Microcontroller Division. "The availability of our software adds considerable value to our automotive MCU offerings by providing an industry-standard development platform that enhances quality, speeds time to market and helps reduce cost."

"Delivering such a highly integrated software solution to our customers was achieved by combining the technical strengths of both companies," said Uwe Reder, director of engineering for the EB Automotive Software Business Unit. "We have positioned EB tresos Studio as an open tool for configuration and code generation of AUTOSAR basic software. This collaboration has enabled Freescale to focus their resources on basic software development."

AUTOSAR software addresses the challenge of increasing code complexity by providing an open automotive software architecture, jointly developed by automobile OEMs, suppliers and tool developers. AUTOSAR supports the development of innovative yet standardized electronic systems that improve quality, performance, safety and environmental friendliness. It also helps simplify the process of updating software and hardware over the life of a vehicle.

Today's high-end automobiles contain up to 70 ECUs, which control the vehicle's major functions, such as powertrain management. Automakers must respond to growing requirements for advanced safety, environmental protection and driver convenience, which increases the number of microelectronics components in a car running even more lines of code. According to industry sources, the average car in 1990 had one million lines of code; by 2010, the average car is expected to have up to 100 million lines of code. Much of this code is proprietary and custom-made, which can drive up the cost and complexity of automotive system integration.

About Freescale AUTOSAR software Freescale's AUTOSAR software for the S12X, MPC556x and MPC551x MCU families is engineered to conform to the AUTOSAR R2.1 standard. The software release includes two key AUTOSAR software components: the microcontroller abstraction layer (MCAL) and the operating system (OS). Freescale is the only semiconductor vendor to offer both an AUTOSAR-compliant OS and MCAL component. A leading proponent of automotive software standards, Freescale has nearly a decade of experience in developing and delivering OSEK/VDX-compliant operating systems to the automotive industry.

By developing low-level software for its 32-bit and 16-bit MCUs, Freescale is able to optimize its software for each specific MCU family. Developing software that complies with the AUTOSAR standard minimizes the need for custom drivers, thus enhancing code and cost efficiency. For customers, AUTOSAR compliance makes the MCU easier to use, saves development and integration time, and helps them enhance quality and decrease overall development cost.

The AUTOSAR-compliant software bundle is available now from Freescale and EB. For more information about the software, visit www.freescale.com/files/pr/autosar.html.

About EB tresos® EB tresos® is a family of integrated products for developing embedded automotive software. The central components of EB tresos® are AUTOSAR-compliant basic software modules, which include modules for diagnostic functions, ECU state management, memory management, the runtime environment and a complete communication stack for CAN, FlexRay(TM) and LIN. The software modules are configured, validated and generated through EB tresos Studio, which is an open and integrated tool environment based upon Eclipse. A highlight in EB tresos® is its full support for the FlexRay bus, including tools for network planning, testing and bus monitoring.
