ABB Automation

Release date: June 26, 2007

2007-06-26 - Complete rational design, equipment uniformity and total component integration keys to success

Madrid, June 26, 2007. Cartiere del Garda, a Lecta group company based in Italy has initiated the construction of a new technologically advanced and environmentally friendly co-generation plant to serve their Riva del Garda factory and the local community. The power plant will cover the paper mill's demands for electricity, heating and cooling. Additionally, the plant will also supply the district heating system, which the Trento, Italy based multi-utility Alto Garda Servizi will be installing for the Riva council. ABB has been assigned to execute the electro-instrumental part of the power plant in an 8 million EUR contract assigned by Sadelmi, a leading company in engineering, procurement and construction of power generation plants, is the main EPC contractor for the overall project.

ABB will be supplying the substations for connecting to the grid system, the power and distribution transformers, medium and low voltage electrical boards, field instruments (ProfiBus), DCS, electrical protection. Also included for delivery is a fume analysis system, an extremely important feature due to the vicinity of inhabited areas and nearby tourism sites. Together with Sadelmi, ABB is also responsible for the engineering of all the electrical lots, commissioning and DCS maintenance and instrumentation.

"The benefit for the customer is that the solution we provide will merge the various electrical sectors into a single system. By choosing ABB, with the capacity to handle all aspects covering plant engineering and product delivery, Cartiere del Garda and Saldemi are ensuring that they have a complete, uniform design and highest quality integration of equipment." explained Massimo Danieli, Territory manager of ABB's Power Generation Business Unit for the Mediterranean region.

The project represents a new step in the co-operation between Cartiere del Garda and ABB, which has had a strong partnership for several years in the field of process automation.

The power plant, designed, supplied and built by Sadelmi is in total worth about 54 million EUR. Consisting of a high performance co-generation combined cycle, the plant will be completed by exchangers, heat pumps and boilers for the district heating system. The plant is expected to have an 86 percent efficiency rate when it starts operating. Heat regeneration and the system's architecture will ensure the production of clean supplementary energy and will ensure considerable savings for the company and the community as well as a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, in line with the Kyoto Protocol, completely in line with Cartiere del Garda's environmental protection policy.

Commissioning of the project is planned for the summer of 2008. The district heating system will be installed during later stages and is expected to be in operation by 2012.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 109,000 people.
