Hamilton Sundstrand, A United Technologies Co.

Release date: August 20, 2007

Hamilton Sundstrand Delivers First Cabin Air Conditioning Packs for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn., Aug. 20 /- Hamilton Sundstrand has delivered its first two cabin air conditioning packs to Boeing for the initial flight-test of the 787 Dreamliner. Hamilton Sundstrand is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

Two cabin air conditioning packs will be installed on each Boeing 787, providing enough air conditioning power to cool more than 50 homes. The packs are part of the aircraft's environmental control system.

Hamilton Sundstrand's cabin air conditioning packs are the first ever to be electrically driven. Typical cabin air conditioning packs use outside or "bleed" air that enters through the engines to produce the required cooling, but new technologies have enabled 787 engineers at Hamilton Sundstrand to pressurize outside air within the cabin air conditioning pack, reducing overall energy usage while contributing to the aircraft's all-electric design.

"The Boeing 787 will operate more efficiently because of the cabin air conditioning packs and the way Hamilton Sundstrand is driving its systems for this aircraft with electric motors instead of bleed air," said Roy Mainelli, Hamilton Sundstrand's director of 787 Air Management Systems.

In addition to the environmental control system, Boeing chose Hamilton Sundstrand to provide the 787's auxiliary power system, electric power generation and start system, remote power distribution system, primary power distribution system and high-voltage DC equipment racks, emergency power system, nitrogen generation system and electric pump subsystem.

Rolls-Royce also chose Hamilton Sundstrand to supply the gearbox system for its Trent 1000 engine being developed for the Boeing 787. And Kidde Aerospace & Defense, which recently joined Hamilton Sundstrand, is supplying Boeing with the complete fire protection systems package for the 787. The 787 program is expected to generate more than $15 billion in revenue for Hamilton Sundstrand over the life of the program.

With 2006 revenues of $5 billion, Hamilton Sundstrand employs approximately 17,500 people worldwide and is headquartered in Windsor Locks, Conn. Among the world's largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and industrial products, the company designs, manufactures and services aerospace systems and provides integrated system solutions for commercial, regional, corporate and military aircraft. It also is a major supplier for international space programs.

United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company that provides high-technology products and services to the aerospace and building industries.
