After Spring Floods Almost Wash It Out Of Business
Countless jobs saved in Herculean effort
Machinery Services Corp. and its sister company Rapid Pump & Meter Service Co., Inc (Paterson N.J.) have been lauded as literally saving a manufacturing business after the facility found itself under seven feet of water after the mid April flooding that devastated so many area homes and businesses. A homeowner has to deal with wet carpets and basement furniture. When an entire production facility is submerged, the cleanup is a difficult endeavor, however, the repair and restoration work can appear to be an impossible task.
According to Ralph Ditillio, Global Director Facilities, Covalence Adhesives (HQ Lexington Ma), Machinery Services Corp. not only accomplished such a task, they probably saved their business in the process, restoring an entire manufacturing facility to 100% production in just 15 days. Mr. Ditillio states that on April 18th, the day the waters subsided, Rich Taylor, president of Machinery Services Corp. walked through the Middlesex county facility to assess the damage and evaluate the services needed. The very next day there was a 25-man crew of electrical, electronic & mechanical technicians on site and working around the clock. By Monday morning two critical pieces of equipment were up and running.
Under water were two coating lines, three air compressors, three slitters, boiler room and associated equipment, wrapping machines, electrical control panels as well as main distribution panels and dozens of additional pieces of ancillary equipment. The repairs consisted of stripping down each piece of equipment to the casting which included removing electrical motors and getting them back overnight, removing all pillow block bearings and spindles and locating replacements, re-lubricating shafts and gearboxes, rewiring and replacing contacts in electrical control panels. Any Manufacturing facility loses the ability to produce their products when production lines are down, but in this case timing became critical. This facility produces specialty products that are needed in a very timely fashion or Covalence's customers would also have suffered. Without immediate response to restore the facility the business would have been gravely affected. Mr. Ditillio quotes his company president as using this experience as an example to his entire organization globally "that when people work together and are dedicated to what they do there is nothing they can't accomplish".
Mr. Ditillio stated that "In my 33 years of facility experience I never met a team of individuals that could have done what Machinery Services Corp. accomplished in such a short period of time".
