MTS Systems Corp. - Sensor Div.

Release date: April 24, 2007

MTS Sensors E- and C-Series Sensors Prove Reliable, Cost-Efficient for Pharmaceutical Industry

CARY, N.C. (April 24, 2007) - MTS Systems Corp., Sensors Division is supplying its E- and C-Series TemposonicsŪ magnetostrictive sensors to the pharmaceutical industry for processing and packaging applications. While MTS has been supplying its M-Series level sensors to pharmaceutical companies for mixing, apportioning and liquid, paste and powder dispensing, it is now supplying its position sensors as well for greater control and efficiency in packaging automation and process.

"Automation is the key," said Dave Edeal, Temposonics marketing manager, MTS Sensors. "Pharmaceutical packaging applications are cost-sensitive, and the E- and C-Series sensors are not only low-cost, but also very accurate and reliable. The simplicity of their designs, ease of use, and the ability to embed either sensor in customers' product designs makes them an ideal fit for the requirements of packaging equipment."

MTS Temposonics linear-position sensors provide accurate, non-contact position sensing in a wide array of output configurations and application housing styles. Magnetostrictive technology has clear performance advantages over pots or LVDTs due to its non-contact, repeatable, no-drift, no-wear measurement.

The E-Series

The E-Series sensors offer basic, economical feedback for no-frills, low-cost sensing that is reliable, making them ideal for both new and retrofit factory automation applications. The model EP2's low profile package design allows installation in limited space applications. Because it allows for automatic upload of the sensor-scaling factor and therefore automatic calibration, system setup and maintenance are simplified and costs are cut by eliminating the possibility of operator error. In addition, the "Start/Stop" pulse output enables users to sense as many as four distinct positions at one time along the same axis.

"The automation gives machine builders the ability to provide automatic or semi-automatic machines to the pharmaceutical industry that offer a lot of variations in their processes as opposed to having a hardware-fixed set of parameters that are very difficult and time consuming to change," said Edeal.

The model ER "rod and cylinder" with a variety of mounting options helps to simplify sensor installation design and facilitate articulated motion sensing. These sensors can be used in sorting, pressing and packaging equipment positioning applications.

The C-Series

The C-Series sensor is the smallest magnetostrictive position sensor available. In addition to being in a package specifically designed and priced to fit commercial and light-industrial applications, the flexible shaft allows further installation in applications where curvilinear measurement is required.

The C-Series' modular architecture is built upon a base Core sensor to which additional application-specific features can be added as dictated by the application. This allows customers to avoid costs that are unnecessary for their application, while also allowing them to integrate the sensor completely into their specific product packaging.

MTS POSITION SENSORS PROVE RELIABLE, COST-EFFICIENT FOR PHARMA

The compact size and optimized cost of the C-Series Core sensor makes it an ideal choice to replace older technology sensors, such as linear potentiometers and LVDTs. The C-Series sensor brings immediate benefits to the customer, including lower costs due to the elimination of expensive signal conditioning and higher reliability due to the non-contact nature of magnetostrictive sensor technology.
