Rofin-Sinar, Inc.

Release date: March 12, 2007

PLYMOUTH, Mich. and HAMBURG, Germany, March 12 // -- Rofin-Sinar Laser GmbH, an affiliate company of Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:RSTI), one of the world's leading developers and manufacturers of high-performance laser beam sources and laser-based solutions, today announced that it has acquired 80% of the common stock of m2k-laser GmbH, Freiburg, Germany, in a cash transaction. Further terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

The remaining 20% of the common stock of m2k-laser GmbH is still held by the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Munich, Germany, and two former founders. Dr. Marc Kelemen, one of the founders, will be responsible as Managing Director for operations.

The company was founded in 2001 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Solid-State Physics (www.iaf.fraunhofer.de) in Freiburg, Germany. m2k-laser GmbH (www.m2k-laser.de) develops and manufactures semiconductor lasers based on the III-V compounds GaAs and GaSb for use so far predominantly in the scientific industry. Main products are tapered diode lasers and tapered amplifiers. Under two separate additional agreements, the Company will pay for access to certain know-how and for the use of the existing infrastructure of the Fraunhofer IAF Institute in Freiburg.

"We are glad to have m2k-laser in our Group," commented Gunther Braun, CEO and President of RSTI. "We see this acquisition as an opportunity to strengthen our technology base and our market position in the component sector. M2k will continue to operate as a stand-alone company and will also continue to provide their products to other laser companies."

"This acquisition proves that IAF's research results are attractive in terms of industrial usage," commented Professor Günter Weimann, Director of IAF. "Being part of a larger company opens up new resources to enhance the development of cutting edge technology in our field," added Dr. Marc Kelemen.

With operational headquarters in Plymouth, Michigan, and Hamburg, Germany, Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc. designs, develops, engineers and manufactures laser sources and laser-based system solutions for a wide range of applications. With production facilities in the US, Germany, UK, Sweden, Singapore and Japan, Rofin-Sinar is one of the world's leading designers and manufacturers of industrial lasers and currently has more than 25,000 laser units installed worldwide and serves more than 3,000 customers.
