Delcam to Show Latest Machining Techniques for Boat Builders
Delcam will demonstrate its full range of design to manufacture CADCAM software on booth 1836 at the IBEX boat building exhibition, to be held from November 1st to 3rd at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Particular attention will be given to the new release of Delcam's CAM software PowerMILL. This offers a unique solution for companies looking to move from traditional machining methods to the use of computer-controlled machines. The combination of CNC machines (such as CMS) and Delcam software is already being used successfully by leading boat manufacturers including Ferretti, Numarine, Jeanneau and Karnic Powerboats. The software offers fast calculation times, a wide range of five-axis strategies for both roughing and finishing, and comprehensive gouge and collision checking, plus integrated simulation so that problems can be corrected on the computer before machining starts.
PowerMILL is particularly renowned for its capabilities in five-axis machining - an essential part of many marine manufacturing operations. The system incorporates a range of projection machining options that allow complex five-axis operations to be programmed both quickly and easily, for example, when machining patterns or master models for hulls or superstructures.
PowerMILL also supports programming of five-axis swarf machining, a cutting technique carried out with the side of the tool rather than the tip. This approach is used for the finishing of composite components and a variety of other trimming operations, where it gives the ability to undertake the complete job in a single set-up rather than having to use the multiple set-ups required with three-axis machining. Swarf machining also gives the ability to cut at a fixed angle to the surface and so produces a better appearance on the part.
Along with machining techniques from Delcam attendees to booth 1836 can also see special methods for the generation of 2D patterns from 3D CAD models within Delcam's PowerSHAPE CAD system. These strategies are based on un-wrapping techniques first developed for the footwear industry to allow the cutting of leather shapes from shoe designs. They provide quick and easy methods for the creation of the prepreg designs needed for the manufacture of complex, curved shapes. The 2D patterns can then be arranged to give the most cost-effective use of material with Delcam's nesting functionality.
