Joining Technologies

Release date: June 1, 2006

Joining Technologies Installs TRUMPF Two-Kilowatt Continuous-Wave Disk Nd:YAG Laser

June 2006 - Joining Technologies (East Granby, Connecticut) is preparing for the installation of an all new TRUMPF two-kilowatt Disk Nd:YAG continuous-wave laser. Working collaboratively with TRUMPF Inc. (Farmington, Connecticut and Plymouth, Michigan), Joining Technologies was able to procure one of the most technologically advanced industrial Nd:YAG continuous-wave lasers available for subcontract services. Joining Technologies is a highly specialized laser and electron beam welding job shop, offering a full line of services, from prototype to high-volume production, to on-site system integration.

The TRUMPF Nd:YAG laser will allow the company to offer government and private industry unparalleled high-power laser capability for welding/joining development geared toward aerospace, fuel cell and power generation, as well as military applications. Joining Technologies has several programs scheduled for the new system, which will be integrated with a six-axis robot and heavy-duty rotary workstation. The company is planning to use the ultra-modern Nd:YAG for components currently processed with traditional high-vacuum electron beam welding. The company has made a considerable investment in these new, higher-output lasers.

"Lasers offer the freedom of part manipulation and sophisticated motion, free from the constraints of a pressure vessel. Electron beam welding is not as popular as it once was and engineers often reference the laser for high-production welding applications," states Dave Hudson, president of Joining Technologies.

The continuous-wave Nd:YAG workstation at Joining Technologies will feature two fiber optic beam paths capable of performing high-power, high-speed welds with remote welding and beam scanning technology. It will also have a twin beam delivery optic beneficial for joining difficult materials.

The Nd:YAG laser will be the first two-kilowatt laser of its kind to be installed in the US for subcontract services. The primary benefits of the disk versus traditional lamp-pumped rivals are higher energy efficiencies and better, more intense beam quality. The new disk laser will provide ultra-high welding speeds and deep penetration with a very small heat-affected zone.

Joining Technologies is recognized as a world-class resource for challenging micro-welding and joining applications. Their focus on materials joining and devotion to the welding sciences offers their customer the advantage of rapid prototyping and product development. They are widely networked with highly recognized industry partners.
