Johnson Matthey

Release date: February 2, 2006

California Air Resource Board Verifies Johnson Matthey PCRT® Diesel Retrofit System

MALVERN, Pa., June 1, 2006 - Johnson Matthey's Environmental Catalysts and Technologies (ECT) group announced that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has verified its Partial Continuously Regenerating Technology, or PCRT® diesel retrofit system for 1991 to 1993 model year engines used in on-road applications.

Based on Johnson Matthey's patented 2-stage filter technology, the PCRT system combines an oxidation catalyst with an advanced mechanical filter. This device fills the gap for older, dirtier engines with high particulate matter (PM) emissions which may not qualify for a CRT® diesel particulate filter. The PCRT technology doubles that of the DOC device traditionally used for these applications, achieving at least 50%, and up to 77%, PM reduction. The PCRT also reduces HC and CO by up to 70%. This verification qualifies the PCRT system as a CARB Level II technology, and makes it the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) for the 91-93 engines affected under the CARB Solid Waste Collection Vehicles Rule as well as the On-Road Heavy-Duty Public Fleet Vehicles Rule.

"Customers used to be limited in the amount of PM emissions they could reduce on older engines," said Marty Lassen, commercial development and marketing manager for Johnson Matthey's ECT Group. "The PCRT system gives over double the PM reduction of a DOC, from a company and technology they know and trust."

About The PCRT Diesel Retrofit System Johnson Matthey's PCRT system runs on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) to reduce odors and run cleaner. It's fit and forget technology enables it to seamlessly replace current mufflers with little-to-no maintenance. The new filter material features the attributes of a flow-through substrate as well as a wall-flow filter to collect some of the engine-out soot, which enables PM reduction without plugging the system's filter. Flow-through features allow exhaust to flow freely without a significant increase in back pressure.

In addition, the PCRT utilizes the same NO2 reaction patented by JM and used by passive diesel particulate filter systems to oxidize a portion of the soot collected and passively regenerate the filter.

For more information about the specific conditions for which the Johnson Matthey PCRT diesel retrofit system has been approved, visit www.jmcsd.com or go to http://arb.ca.gov/diesel/verdev/home/home.htm
