Siemens AG

Release date: March 7, 2006

Optical Profinet Structures Using Plastic Fiber-Optic Cables

Fiber-optic cables are used in industrial communication networks for installations subject to electromagnetic interference or when zero radiated emission is desirable, if there are potential differences or for outdoor installations. Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) is now supplementing its range of Profinet cabling components with plastic fiber-optic cable technology for optical communication. Glass fiber-optic cables are already being used for longer transmission links, but from now on plastic fibers - either polymer optic fiber (POF) or polymer clad fiber (PCF) - are also being used for short distances. The advantage of plastic over glass is the much easier assembly of connectors on site.

The new range of products for the plastic fiber optic cable technology comprises a wide range of passive and active network components as well as distributed field devices with integrated POF/PCF interfaces.

Two of the new active network components are the Scalance X101-1 POF media converter and the Scalance X202-2P IRT Industrial Ethernet Switch, both of which have both electrical and optical POF interfaces. This not only enables both electrical and optical network structures to be constructed, but also permits the connection of terminals with optical or electrical interfaces. For higher system availability, redundant rings can be configured.

The passive network components include the new SC RJ connection system for POF and PCF cables for machine-level installation. The SC RJ connectors standardized by Profibus International are consistently used for all new components; these can be assembled particularly quickly and easily on site.

The products of the Simatic ET 200S I/O range also communicates optically now. The IM 151-3 PN FO interface module, which has two integral POF interfaces, was developed for this purpose. This enables linear-structures - familiar to users from the fieldbuses - to be set up, which are oriented toward the machine and plant structures.
