The Danfoss office in the north-west Czech Republic town of Chodov had a visit from a very satisfied customer recently. For the past four decades, the customer's domestic gas boiler had been working perfectly. But in March 2010, after 37 years without a glitch, a coil on an EVJD 6 solenoid valve wore out. Impressed that he hadn't had to do any maintenance on the boiler's valve system all this time, he immediately contacted the nearest Danfoss technical support team for help.
Long lifetime ensures better performance The coil, or solenoid, converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. When an electrical current is applied to the coil, a magnetic field is produced that lifts a plunger inside the valve, opening the valve mechanically.
Luckily, it was easy to find a replacement coil for the customer's boiler - and, after only a few minor cosmetic changes, the new coil fit the existing solenoid valve perfectly.
The rest of the gas boiler is still going strong, including its old EVJD 6 solenoid valve. Launched in 1972, the valve has undergone a number of changes over the years. Now known as the EV220B, the direct servo-operated valve is designed for applications that demand a robust solution and moderate flow rates - a good match for commercial gas boilers.
Although 37 years of service is impressive, it's not a Danfoss record. Many Danfoss products are still in good working order after 50 or 60 years. Product lifetime is of course dependent on the type of application it's used in, and a number of other factors such as ambient temperature, the type of media in the application and how often it's used. But whatever the application, using reliable, durable components helps ensure better product performance, a longer lifetime - and more uptime.
With its new coil, the valve and gas boiler are bound to keep providing hot water and heating for the Czech household for many years to come.
