Conditional Commitment Made for Hawaii wind power project.

March 23, 2010

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced that Department of Energy offered conditional commitment on $117 million loan guarantee to finance construction and start-up of 30 MW wind energy project - twelve 2.5 MW wind turbine generators and battery energy storage system - in Kahuku, HI. According to Chu, "This investment will create jobs and cut our dependence on oil, while promoting America's leadership in the global race for the clean energy industries of tomorrow." Read More

Industry Leaders push for national renewable energy standard.

Wind energy industry executives called on Congress to pass strong national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) as best way to save and create U.S. jobs. As CEO of American Wind Energy Association, Denise Bode said there is potential for growth if long term support can be garnered. She also said that resulting national RES will enable new installations as well as new manufacturing. Industry representatives will hold 70+ meetings with lawmakers to urge passage of RES. Read More

Conservation Groups urge revised LA coastal restoration plan.

In statement to LA Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration, Environmental Defense Fund and others said office should amend its Fiscal Year 2011 draft plan for coastal restoration and hurricane protection. Draft plan lacks details on programs that can reduce risk in near term. Groups said state should identify funding sources, including unused disaster recovery funds, and specific projects for cost-effective, community-based programs that can reduce hurricane risk for residents. Guidance Announced for tax treatment of Smart Grid grants.

Department of Treasury and Department of Energy announced guidance on tax treatment for grantees receiving Recovery Act funding under $3.4 billion Smart Grid Investment Grant program. IRS is providing safe harbor under section 118(a) of Internal Revenue Code for corporations receiving funding under this program. With determination that Smart Grid Investment Grants are non-taxable, corporate utilities can launch investments with clear indication of tax status for their projects. Read More

Secretary Chu announces funding for NRG Energy project.

U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu announced today that a project with NRG Energy has been selected to receive up to $154 million, including funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Located in Thompsons, TX, the post-combustion capture and sequestration project will demonstrate advanced technology to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. It will also assist with enhanced oil recovery efforts from nearby oil field. Read More

Senate has passed H.R. 4213, American Workers, State, and Business Relief Act of 2010, by 62 to 36 margin, which provides 1 yr retroactive extension of biodiesel tax incentive. Incentive will help America realize job creation, energy security, and environmental benefits associated with biodiesel, according to Manning Feraci, NBB VP of Federal Affairs. Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future has awarded Farming for the Future Predoctoral Fellowships to 8 university students for 2009-2010 academic year. Eight additional students were awarded Eating for the Future Predoctoral Fellowships. Each predoctoral fellowship provides 1 yr of support of up to $60,000 to be used for tuition, stipend, and/or research expenses depending on individual needs. Funded by NASA to archive data from past and present planetary missions, astronomical observations, and laboratory data, Planetary Data System includes data sets from 7 instruments on board NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Each instrument is unique and will provide data in different formats, and much of the data is low level, not highly processed, giving researchers flexibility when working with data. SME Education Foundation has funded $815,000 to Project Lead The Way (PLTW) summer program, in which 6-8th grade students will learn basics of engineering concepts during 1 week summer camp. Funds will be used to expand Gateway Academy to 300 middle schools throughout U.S. Enrollees in national 5013c, not-for-profit program will learn about drafting/graphic design on computer, use real lab equipment, and will be involved in projects such as building robotic vehicles and gliders. PMA Business Conditions Report shows 43% of participants expect improvement in economic activity during next 3 months, while 52% predict no change. Increased orders are anticipated by 48% of companies and 54% of participants report shipping levels above 3 months ago. Companies with workforce on short time or layoff decreased to 42% in March. Manufacturers support extension of tax credit.

According to NAM President John Engler, manufacturers are pleased with Vice President Biden's announcement to extend Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit by additional $5 billion. Program provides 30% tax credit for investments in facilities that manufacture clean energy technologies including wind, solar, batteries, advanced transportation, and advanced energy transmission.
