ASTM Workshop to focus on alkali-aggregate reaction.

Scheduled for June 6, 2010, Specifications on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction workshop is intended to help sponsoring committees and recently proposed joint subcommittee develop specifications on alkali-silica reaction in concrete. Workshop will explore current specifications, how effective they are, and how they might be improved. 2010 NHA Expo expected to be larger than 2009.

According to Bruce Cole, Expo Manager for NHA, 2010 NHA Hydrogen Conference and Expo is expected to be 10-20% larger compared to 2009 event. This year, the theme is "Green energy, green jobs, and green planet." Equipment Finance Index shows decline in volume for January.

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index shows new business volume in January declined by 24% when compared to January, 2009, while month-to-month new business volume decreased by 52.1% from December. Credit approvals increased to 71%, but most companies reported fewer transactions submitted for approval. While charge-offs decreased to 1.68%, they rose by 19.2% when compared to January 2009. NTSB-Issued Recommendations address FAA issues.

National Transportation Safety Board has detailed several recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ranging from training and operations to documentation and equipment. Specific requirements address standard operating procedures consistency, flight crew monitoring techniques, reportable icing intensities definitions, and airspeed indicator display systems. Safety Recommendations to FRA require installation of audio/image recorders.

NTSB recommended Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) require installation of crash- and fire-protected, inward- and outward-facing audio and image recorders in all controlling locomotive cabs and cab car operating compartments (R-10-1). Another recommendation, R-10-2, would require railroads to regularly review and use in-cab audio and image recordings to verify train crew actions are in accordance with rules and procedures essential to safety. Consultant Gary W. Dallin of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, director of the GalvInfo Center, a program of the International Zinc Association, has received the Kenneth J. Boedecker Jr. Distinguished Service Award for his exceptional contributions to ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products. A member of ASTM International since 1985, Dallin served as chair of Committee A05 from 2004-2009 and currently works on several A05 subcommittees. Read More

NTSB Chairman Hersman testifies on aircraft icing.

In testimony before the House Aviation Subcommittee, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman discussed dangers of aircraft flying in icing conditions and highlighted longstanding Safety Board recommendations that have yet to be adopted by FAA. NTSB voted to keep the issue area, along with its four open recommendations to the FAA, on the 2010 Most Wanted List with a "red" classification, which indicates unacceptable response by the FAA.
