ACE10 Operators' Day to be held June 22.

March 18, 2010

On Operators' Day, water operators will have access to technical sessions and exhibit hall at cost of $125 for AWWA members or $155 for non-members. This includes opportunity to earn continuing education units upon completion of designated technical sessions and exhibit hall sessions. ACE10 will also offer events that will enable attendees to explore future of safe water, gain insight into cutting-edge research and best practices, and experience latest products and services available. Workshop at NIST to focus on preserving digital data.

From March 29-31, experts will gather at "U.S. Workshop on Roadmap for Digital Preservation Interoperability Framework" to develop a standards roadmap on preserving vast amount of digital data over long term. According to study by International Data Corp, by 2011 there will be 1,610 exabytes of digital information. Digital preservation standard will enable users and systems to access digital content even when preserved on varied equipment by different digital preservation repositories. Read More

ANSI to hold couse on national standards development.

Scheduled for March 31, 2010, The American Way: The American National Standard (ANS) Development Process will provide attendees with greater understanding of practical application of the development process and procedures and benefits of accreditation by the Institute. ANSI invites comments on U.S.-China conformity assessment.

ANSI has teamed with U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) in support of U.S. Department of Commerce project on conformity assessment issues in China. Project aims to include roundtable discussions with U.S. and Chinese industry, government, and conformity assessment practitioners to address concerns by U.S. companies. Kick-off meeting for project was held March 9, 2010 and questions or suggestions can be submitted by Friday, March 26 to Elise Owen of ANSI or Ryan Ong of USCBC. Read More

Government Transition to Cloud Computing. to be addressed at conference.

Scheduled for April 5th, SIIA's annual SaaS/Gov conference will explore government's adoption of Software as a Service and how the cloud has simplified operations and made federal IT infrastructure more interoperable. Conference will include executives from Salesforce.com and Google, who will evaluate wide range of applications and how they are being utilized by the government. ASHRAE Conference to focus on energy-conserving practices.

Scheduled for April 19-20, ASHRAE's specialty conference titled Existing Buildings in Urban Areas: Dramatically Cutting the Energy Waste, will guide building community and government in reducing energy in existing buildings. Speakers will include Tony Malkin, President of Malkin Properties and Jody Durst, Co-President of The Durst Organization. Angle, VP of Product Engineering for Weir Specialty Pumps has been named Hydraulic Institute (HI) 2009 Member of the Year in recognition for distinguishing himself by advancing technical work of HI in various venues. Julian Atchia, New Product Development Manager for SJE-RhombusĀ®, was presented with an award from the Hydraulic Institute (HI) concerning his contributions to writing ANSI/HI standard 9.6.4-2009 (Vibration Measurements and Allowable Values for Rotodynamic Pumps). The culmination of such work, International Green Construction Code (IGCC), represents merger of 2 national efforts to develop adoptable and enforceable green building codes. Manufacturing Technology Consumption up 26% over last January.

According to AMTDA (American Machine Tool Distributors' Association) and AMT, January US manufacturing technology consumption totaled $130.96 million. This total, as reported by companies participating in USMTC program, was down 40.3% from December but up 26.2% from total reported for January 2009. US manufacturing technology consumption is also reported on regional basis for 5 geographic breakdowns of the United States: Northeast, Southern, Midwest, Central, and Western. Read More

Over 100 industry leaders from NFPA member companies converged on Laguna Beach, CA from February 24-27 for 2010 NFPA Annual Conference, which provided executives critical information about leading their organizations forward. Fatigue endangers transportation workers and passengers.

Speaking before annual conference of the National Sleep Foundation, NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman encouraged sleep research and healthcare community to continue their efforts to educate transportation policy makers of dangers of fatigue in all modes of transportation. Board has made safety recommendations that range from deploying fatigue detection systems to installing electronic on-board recorders that collect and maintain hours of service data on vehicle operators. GAWDA Member helps U.S. Bobsled Team win Gold.

Focusing on gases and welding in recently concluded Winter Olympic Games, February issue of GAWDA Edge features article entitled "Cooler Runnings," which details GAWDA member Lincoln Electric Company's partnership with U.S. Bobsled team. Lincoln Electric supplied welding equipment that was used on U.S. sleds. It was part of an alliance formed between NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine and stock car manufacturer Chassis Dynamics, called it Bo-Dyn, to build a better sled. Read More

ISO has announced that ISO 26000, Guidance on Social Responsibility, has been confirmed and registered as Final Draft International Standard. This is the final stage in development of ISO standard before it is published as ISO International Standard. ISO 26000 is intended to assist in ushering companies, government agencies, and other organizations toward more sustainable global economy by establishing common guidance on social responsibility concepts, definitions, and methods of evaluation.
