AWWA Webcast addresses inorganic treatment issues.

On February 10 of 2010, AWWA will host "Inorganic Treatment: Avoiding Inadvertent Compliance Challenges," a webcast intended to summarize recent surveys of lesser-known inorganics in US and Canadian drinking waters. It will also provide overview of pH adjustment issues and stability of water as it relates to inorganics as well as present case studies from systems that experienced unintended consequences when adding inorganic treatment process. NIST awards $123 million in grants for research facilities.

NIST announced grants totaling more than $123 million to 11 universities and nonprofit research organization to provide cost-shared support for scientific research facility construction. Targeting ultimate research such as off-shore wind power and coral reef ecology to quantum physics and nanotechnology, projects will launch more than $250 million in new laboratory construction projects this year. Houston FAA Controllers are using new satellite-based tracking system.

January 14, 2010

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt announced that Houston air traffic controllers are beginning to use Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology, an improved satellite-based system, to efficiently and safely separate and manage aircraft flying over the Gulf of Mexico. Technology will also allow FAA to provide new, more direct routes over the Gulf of Mexico, improving efficiency of aircraft operations while using less fuel. Read More

Additive Manufacturing gets a universal language.

In effort to eliminate confusion over terminology, design, testing methods, materials, and processing differences, SME's Rapid Technologies and Additive Manufacturing community approached ASTM to develop standards. Result is the publication, "Standard Terminology for Additive Manufacturing Technologies," which will allow manufacturers to compare and contrast performance of different additive processes and enable researchers and process developers to provide repeatable results. BIO Asks Accurate Emissions Accounting under cap-and-trade rules.

January 14, 2010

BIO submitted comments to California Air Resources Board on its preliminary draft regulation for the state's Cap-and-Trade Program, scheduled for 2011 implementation. While pointing out that "Lifecycle emissions are not applied in the accounting for biomass used in electricity generation," executive VP of BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section concluded that "to incorporate them for biofuels would unfairly incentivize one form of energy production over another." Acknowledged as the number one influencer of manufacturing education, SME Education Foundation will hold 30th Anniversary event on Sept 16, 2010. Legacy of individual donors who established endowments 30 years ago allows Foundation to fund awards, scholarships, and in-kind gifts to colleges and universities. AMT reports rise in manufacturing technology consumption.

January 13, 2010

According to USMTC report by AMT and AMTDA, companies reported U.S. manufacturing technology consumption in November was up 16.0% from October but down 16.2% from November 2008. Same pattern showed for 5 geographic areas, except Western Region, which was down from October and last November. Peter Borden, AMTDA President, said 3-month upward trend is positive news. Report provides regional and national U.S. consumption data of domestic/imported machine tools and related equipment. Read More

ASTM Committee approves road materials test standard.

January 13, 2010

ASTM D7552, Test Method for Determining the Complex Shear Modulus (G*) of Bituminous Mixtures Using Dynamic Shear Rheometer, has been approved by Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials. Developed by Subcommittee D04.26 on Fundamental/Mechanistic Tests, standard will enable operators to determine complex shear modulus of field cores, regardless of layer thickness. Primary users will be independent test laboratories specializing in forensic investigation of projects. Read More

Security Standard aids emergency operations center development.

Draft standard WK12954, Guide for the Development of an Emergency Operations Center (EOC), is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee E54.02 on Emergency Preparedness, Training, and Procedures. It aims to provide advice and existing best business practices for creation of EOCs. Glenn Wisbey, an E54 member, said that this proposed guide will walk emergency managers or business continuity planners through development process when new or updated EOC is needed. Read More

ASTM Committee approves 2 dosimetry standards.

ASTM Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications has approved ASTM E2628, Practice for Dosimetry for Radiation Processing, and ASTM E2701, Guide for Performance Characterization of Dosimeters and Dosimetry Systems for Use in Radiation Processing. ASTM E2628 outlines requirements for using dosimetry and will serve as guide for use of other E10.01 standards, while ASTM E2701 describes influence quantities that might affect performance of dosimeters and dosimetry systems. ANSI highlights standards for National Blood Donor Month.

ANSI is highlighting standards that help to assure blood is collected, stored, and transfused safely/efficiently. Adopted by AAMI as ANS, ANSI/AAMI/ISO 81060-1:2007, Non-invasive sphygmomanometers - Part 1, specifies use of inflatable cuffs that measure blood pressure. ANSI/AAMI BF64-2002, Leukocyte Reduction Filters offers guidelines to treat blood during transfusion, while ISO 1135-4:2004, Transfusion equipment for medical use, specifies requirements for single-use transfusion sets. IPC and Canon to collaborate on electronics trade show.

Canon Communications LLC and IPC have reached an agreement to jointly produce an electronics manufacturing conference and exhibition this year. Scheduled for Sept 28-30, 2010, event will combine IPC's Midwest Conference and Exhibition and Canon's Electronics Midwest show, and will be co-located with 4 other Canon manufacturing shows. Container Traffic increases after 2½ year decline.

January 13, 2010

According to monthly Global Port Tracker report released by National Retail Federation, import cargo volume at nation's major retail container ports is on track to show gains through first half of 2010. U.S. ports handled 1.09 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units in November, which was down 8% from October and 10% from November 2008. Trend was broken in December, which was estimated at 1.08 million TEU, down slightly from November, but 1.7% increase over December 2008. Read More

ANSI announces ISO development of event management standard.

Standard ISO 20121, to be produced by new ISO project committee, ISO/PC 250, Sustainability in event management, will guide event planners, venues, and other stakeholders in improving/maintaining sustainability measures for events and gatherings. Document will require identification of key issues such as venue selection, operating procedures, supply chain management, procurement, communications, and transport. Tire Industry Association reports full booking of 2010 conference mine tour.

TIA has announced that Caterpillar mine tour, part of 2010 TIA Off-The-Road (OTR) Conference, is fully booked. Organization has created waiting list for attendees still interested in going on mine tour if spot opens up. TIA also reports that hotel occupancy has reached 90% and encourages interested individuals to register on its website. Die Casting Industry Wages slowed in 2009.

Specifically designed for die casting industry, 2009 NADCA Annual Wage and Fringe Benefit Survey represents 39 companies in die casting industry nationwide. This year, the typical participating company had annual sales of $16 million per year, utilized 16 die casting machines, and employed 88 full-time direct labor employees. Less than half (23%) reported general wage adjustment in last 12 months, but larger percentage (28%) plan to make general wage adjustment in next 12 months. Read More
