Art and Optics converge to preserve frescos.

When restoring damaged and faded works of art, artists often employ lasers and other sophisticated imaging techniques to study intricate details, analyze pigments, and search for subtle defects. Italian researchers have developed Thermal Quasi-Reflectography tool, which can capture features not otherwise detectable with naked eye or current imaging techniques. Industry, HBCU Communities Partner to benefit space exploration.

As agency-wide effort, NASA Science and Technology Institute for Minority Institutions (NSTI-MI) is 3-year competitive program aimed at enhancing STEM capabilities of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students. There are 10 students and 3 professors from 2 HBCU institutions at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, which involves partnership with 2 private commercial companies: Mentor Graphics (Wilsonville, OR) and Triad Semiconductor (Winston-Salem, NC). North American EBCIs indicate conducive economic environment.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions dropped to 52.4 in June and has retreated 20+ points since reaching post-recession high in February. However, index continues to indicate economic environment conducive to industry growth as it has for each of last 9 months. EBCI for future North American conditions also lowered in June, falling nearly 14 points to 57.1. One-third of panelists expected conditions to improve over next 6 months. Read More

ASTM Cavanaugh Award honors Dr. Anthony E. Fiorato.

Anthony E. Fiorato, Ph.D., P.E., consultant and executive director of Slag Cement Association, Barrington, IL, has been honored with 2012 William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award for outstanding leadership and contributions in promoting and strengthening national and international voluntary standards system. An ASTM fellow and Award of Merit recipient, Fiorato has been a member of ASTM since 1980 and is currently chairman of Executive Committee of Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory. Read More

ASTM International presents Award of Merit to Stephen J. Boros.

Stephen J. Boros, technical director at Plastics Pipe Institute in Irving, TX, has received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems. A member of ASTM since 1990, Boros works on several F17 subcommittees and task groups and is chairman of Subcommittee F17.38, the Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC 138 on Plastics Pipes, Fittings and Valves for the Transport of Fluids. He has more than 20 years of experience in plastic piping industry. Read More

TITANIUM 2012 to feature industrial/automotive speaker panel.

One will cover effects of chemical milling on Ti6Al4V and Commercially Pure Ti Grade 2 titanium alloys, while other will discuss how vibration impacts titanium exhaust systems. PMA Business Conditions Report details future expectations.

June 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report shows metalforming companies expect business conditions to decline during next 3 months. Of 114 participating companies, 11% anticipate improvement, 57% predict stagnation, and 32% predict decline. Companies also forecast downward trend in incoming orders, with 15% for increase, 52% for no change, and 33% for decrease. Also, average daily shipping levels declined: 31% cited rise, 39% said levels were same, and 30% noted decrease. Read More

ASQ Issues 6,500+ Certifications for training skilled workers.

ASQ issued 6,500+ certifications in USA in 2011 as part of Manufacturing Institute partnership designed to help fill advanced manufacturing positions. In comment, ASQ CEO Paul Borawski said that "By issuing these certifications, ASQ is helping workers gain the knowledge that will help them find work and fill jobs." ASQ offers 17 certifications, including Certified Quality Technician, Certified Calibration Technician, Certified Quality Engineer, and Certified Quality Inspector. Read More
