Conditional Loan Guarantees announced for BrightSource Energy.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced conditional commitments for more than $1.37 billion in loan guarantees under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to BrightSource Energy, Inc. to support construction and start-up of 3 utility-scale concentrated solar power plants. New plants will generate approximately 400 MW of electricity using company's innovative, proprietary technology. Transportation Fellow Anthony Perl endorses Obama rail plan.

Anthony Perl, Transportation Fellow of Post Carbon Institute, has endorsed President Obama's announcement of $8 billion in funding for national high-speed rail system. According to Perl, it is time to connect high-speed rail plan with emerging smart grid, since most major U.S. corridors will need to be electrified over next 25 yr. PMA Business Conditions Report shows 43% of participants expect improvement in economic activity during next 3 months, while 52% predict no change. Increased orders are anticipated by 48% of companies and 54% of participants report shipping levels above 3 months ago. Companies with workforce on short time or layoff decreased to 42% in March. It addresses EU Parliament amendment that bans brominated/chlorinated compounds, which could weaken scientific basis of RoHS and REACH. NADCA President Daniel Twarog has received Ray H. Witt Award given by Advanced Casting Research Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Award recognizes individual leadership in aluminum casting industry. Twarog became Executive VP of NADCA in August 1995, and was promoted to President in June 1999. SME Education Foundation has funded $815,000 to Project Lead The Way (PLTW) summer program, in which 6-8th grade students will learn basics of engineering concepts during 1 week summer camp. Funds will be used to expand Gateway Academy to 300 middle schools throughout U.S. Enrollees in national 5013c, not-for-profit program will learn about drafting/graphic design on computer, use real lab equipment, and will be involved in projects such as building robotic vehicles and gliders. Organization also provides program for certifying product's sound dynamic insertion loss, airflow generated noise, and pressure drop performance ratings. This applies to acoustical duct silencers for which performance rating catalogs are published and made available publicly.
