News Release Rescinded for non-chemical water device project.

May 6, 2010

After careful consideration, ASHRAE decided to rescind its April 7, 2010 press release relating to research project no. RP 1361, Biological Control in Cooling Towers Using Non-Chemical Water Treatment Devices. There have been numerous comments and questions, and ASHRAE Technical Committee, TC 3.6 Water Treatment, which sponsored and is responsible for said project, has not yet reviewed final report. It expects to complete review within next 30-60 days. Read More

Robot Orders post strong gains in first quarter of 2010.

According to RIA, North American robotics manufacturers saw new orders jump 16% in units and 30% in dollars in first quarter of 2010 compared to same quarter in 2009, with total of 3,069 robots valued at $208.1 million. Quarter was also 35% better in units and 45% ahead in dollars over last quarter of 2009. Nearly every major industry increased its purchases, but especially strong gains were seen in robot sales to semiconductor/electronics/photonics industries as well as food and consumer goods. ISO Work Item to address e-commerce transactions.

As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI would like to inform all interested stakeholders of new work item on business-to-consumer electronic commerce transactions and opportunity to become involved with related U.S. Technical Advisory Group. Approved Work Item 10008 will provide parameters for electronic payments and refunds between consumer and merchant, service provider, or other business, assuring that these transactions meet needs of both parties and result in customer satisfaction. NHA announces winners of Hydrogen Student Design Contest..

NHA announced that team from Missouri University of Science and Technology was declared Grand Prize winner, while teams from University of Waterloo and National University of Kyiv received Honorable Mention awards. For 2010 Contest, students were challenged to plan and design basic elements of hydrogen community. They were asked to design one scalable hydrogen fueling station; identify renewable hydrogen sources in community; and identify customers for early market hydrogen applications. Read More

According to BIO President and CEO, BIO's Policy Statement on Options for Increasing Access to Medicines in the Developing World is the first time industry has come together to identify viable options that individual companies should consider as they develop and market their products worldwide. Nelson graduated from Montana State University - Bozeman in 2004 with B.S. in Chemistry and has been in gases and welding business ever since. SME to hold FABTECH 2010 at Georgia World Congress Center.

To be held in Atlanta, November 2-4, 2010, FABTECH 2010 is expected to draw 22,000 attendees and 1,000 exhibiting companies over more than 350,000 net sq ft of floor space. Dean Elkins elected as chair to RIA's board of directors.

Dean Elkins, Senior General Manager of Motoman Inc., was selected as new chair of RIA's board of directors in January 2010. According to Elkins, he hopes "to proliferate the use of robots in emerging and growing markets" as well as re-energize RIA's trade shows and other industry events. Elkins also emphasized importance of vocational education and research to RIA. In closing, Elkins said he looks forward to new membership initiatives that demonstrate the value of RIA. Read More

BIO is hosting 8 U.S. Governors as well as 80+ high-ranking international public officials at 2010 BIO International Convention, which takes place May 3-6 in Chicago, IL. BIO president and CEO Jim Greenwood said, "These leaders recognize that a vibrant biotechnology sector translates into high-wage, high-value jobs, and economic growth for their nation, state or region." VA Senator Mark Herring honored as BIO Legislator of the Year.

BIO announced selection of Virginia State Senator Mark Herring of Leesberg as Legislator of the Year for 2009-2010. As a sponsor of Science and Technology Research Development and Commercialization Act, Senator Herring negotiated compromise that ensured the bill's passage. This year, Senator Herring sponsored and passed Virginia Innovation Investment Act, which offered targeted, long-term capital gains tax exclusion for Virginia bioscience investments. Read More

NEMA's North American EBCIs remain at high levels in April.

According to NEMA's business confidence survey, economic environment facing electrical equipment manufacturers continued to show strong improvement in April. While the Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions was unchanged in April at 71.7, it matched its highest monthly level since May 2004. EBCI for future North American conditions advanced 2.2 points to 73.9 in April, reflecting widespread sentiment that improvement will persist through summer. Read More

Ritterbusch Conformity Assessment Medal honors distinguished service in promoting understanding and application of conformity assessment methods as means of providing confidence in standards compliance for the marketplace. NAM Chief Economist comments on ISM Manufacturing Report.

According to ISM Manufacturing Report, PMI index rose to 60.5 in April, the highest level since June 2004. Improvement was broad-based across all manufacturing industries with increases in production, new orders, and employment. Export component of report remained at near 2-decade high last month, underscoring how exports continue to lead economic recovery. BIO Report shows industry growth despite recession.

Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Initiatives 2010 shows that U.S. employment in bioscience sector reached 1.42 million in 2008. Average bioscience job paid $77,595 in 2008, while each one generated additional 5.8 jobs in national economy. According to report, rapid growth was fueled mainly by research, testing, and medical laboratories. States continue to implement policies/programs to support bioscience development despite facing challenging fiscal conditions. Read More
