NASA Work with GM results in next-gen robotic technology.

NASA and General Motors have been working to accelerate development of next generation robots and related technologies for use in automotive and aerospace industries. Engineers and scientists worked on building humanoid robot capable of safely working side by side with people. The result, named Robonaut 2 (R2), can use its hands to do work beyond scope of prior humanoid machines. Potential uses include helping astronauts during hazardous missions and building safer cars. BACnet adds language options for computers and humans.

At ASHRAE's 2010 Winter Conference, BACnet committee celebrated approval for final publication of 8 addenda to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135, A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks. Addenda include specification for standard way of representing data in XML that will give BACnet new capabilities for communications between wide range of applications. BACnet also supports UTF-8 encoding as well as Value objects to represent different data types in uniform way. Read More

Scheduled for Feb 15-18, co-located AGG1 Aggregates Forum and Expo and World of Asphalt Show and Conference will be the gathering place for aggregates, asphalt, pavement maintenance, and traffic safety professionals. Advance registration is tracking ahead of 2009 events and exhibit space tops last year's final total. ARA, AEM, AED, IPAF, and SIA have joined forces to develop educational document that clarifies what is required for general training and model-specific familiarization of aerial work platform equipment. Document will educate industry on industry-recognized-and-supported standards, present best practices and minimum general training guidelines for AWP operators, emphasize differences between general training and familiarization, and clarify minimum qualifications of trainer. FMA helps with education initiative at Chicago high school.

FMA is helping Wheeling High School implement STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curriculum, which incorporates all four disciplines along with focus on career certifications, college partnerships, and technology. Jim Warren, director of education for FMA, will participate in open house ceremony there on February 11. Next year, school will include metal working, computer engineering, and architectural design classes as well as special engineering and architectural lab. Read More

Tire Rim Slip Performance Test Standard approved by ASTM.

ASTM F2803, Test Method for Evaluating Rim Slip Performance of Tires and Wheels, was developed by Subcommittee F09.20 on Vehicular Testing. Useful to tire and wheel manufacturers, this standard will aid in determining what effect different tire designs, wheel designs, or inflation pressures have on amount of rim slip experienced. Standard is based on rim slip performance test for tires that had been done at Nevada Automotive Test Center for over 20 years. Read More

Robot Orders fall 25% in 2009 but show positive signs.

According to statistics from RIA, total of 9,451 robots valued at $569.2 million were ordered by North American manufacturing companies in 2009. Unit figures were down 25% and dollars declined 36% when compared to 2008 results. In fourth quarter, decline came to near stop as units were flat with same period in 2008 and dollars were down just 5%. Despite overall declines, life sciences/pharmaceutical/biomedical orders rose 43% in units while food and consumer goods orders rose 7%. Read More

ASTM Standard covers sustainable use of recycled asphalt pavement.

Developed by Subcommittee D18.14 on Geotechnics of Sustainable Construction, proposed standard ASTM WK26824 is an important step in guiding federal, state, and local highway agencies, contractors, material suppliers, and consultants on sustainable use of recycled asphalt pavement. According to Haifang Wen, Ph.D., use of recycled materials reduces need for virgin materials and disposal of existing materials and can protect the environment, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. ANSI seeks U.S. experts to develop packaging standards.

ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group to subcommittee ISO/TC 122/SC 4, Packaging and Environment, will coordinate U.S. involvement in 7 new standards on how to best utilize packaging resources while maintaining packaging functionality and considering environmental effects. Subcommittee aims to develop this series of ISO standards based on established European Norms and proposed Asian guidelines.
