AMCA Standard classifies energy efficiency for fans.

AMCA STANDARD 205-10, Energy Efficiency Classification for Fans, was approved by AMCA International membership on February 19, 2010. It defines classification for all fan types designed to be driven by motors of nominal rating 125 W (1/6 hp) and above. Fans can range from purpose-built single fan to series produced fans manufactured in large quantities. Applicable to fans and not fan system, standard also excludes classification for circulating fans. Read More

Agricultural Groups Weigh In on Supreme Court case for biotech alfalfa.

US Supreme Court will decide if lower court acted hastily and incorrectly by banning cultivation of biotech alfalfa despite evidence documenting its safety. On March 8, coalition of agricultural organizations filed joint friend-of-the-court brief to Supreme Court in support of petitioners in Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms. Groups urge that the lower court's decision to approve injunction without adequately hearing key evidence must be reversed for benefit of farmer and consumer. Read More

Manufacturing Production edges down in February.

According to Federal Reserve report, manufacturing production edged down 0.2% in February, following strong increase in January. Two-thirds of manufacturing production gains in February was in durable goods, which are more export-intensive than nondurable goods sectors. At same time, production declines in manufacturing industries tied more to the domestic economy, such as nonmetallic minerals, furniture, and chemicals, signals that the current recovery remains fragile. Glass Cockpits have not led to safety improvements.

NTSB adopted study concluding that single engine airplanes equipped with digital primary flight displays, often referred to as glass cockpits, had no better overall safety record than airplanes with conventional instrumentation. Safety Board determined that because glass cockpits are both complex and vary from aircraft to aircraft, pilots are not always provided with all the information they need. Based on study, NTSB made 6 safety recommendations to the FAA. Read More

BIO Asks Congress to support biotech chemical platform deployment.

BIO's recently released white paper on growth and jobs potential of green chemicals and briefed Congressional staff on commercial status of industrial biotech for algae applications, biobased products, and advanced biofuels. NAM President John Engler issued statement after President Obama's announcement concerning next steps for National Export Initiative, including reinstatement of President's Export Council (PEC) led by CEOs from Boeing (Jim McNerney) and Xerox (Ursula Burns). Specifically, Engler said "NAM has been a strong proponent of domestic policies that will boost U.S. competitiveness, including opening markets for U.S. exports bilaterally and in the Doha Round." NIST's BNQP has announced that MassExcellence, Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence, Vermont Council for Quality, and Washington State Quality Award will receive funding for development of performance excellence curricula targeted at education or manufacturing organizations. ANSI seeks comments on proposed ISO outsourcing standard.

National Standards Body of the Netherlands has submitted proposal to ISO for new standard on outsourcing, for which ANSI, as U.S. member body to ISO, invites stakeholder comments on by April 30, 2010. Proposed standard would provide guidance for outsourcing of any type of service and/or process and corresponding resources.
