ASTM Committee recognizes Anne Goldman with Peryam Award.

Anne Goldman, VP of consumer research at ACCE International in Mississauga, Ontario, has received David R. Peryam Award from ASTM International Committee E18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products. Award recognizes outstanding professionals in the applied sensory science field. A member of ASTM International since 1987, Goldman served a term as E18 chairman from 2002-2004 and currently chairs E18.91, Standing Committee on Subcommittees and Task Groups. Read More

NASA Supercomputer Facility set to advance Earth research.

In state-of-the-art, high-performance computing and data access facility called NASA Earth Exchange (NEX), NASA will open new chapter of discovery using enhanced Landsat Earth-observing data. Virtual laboratory will allow scientists to tackle global Earth science challenges with high-resolution satellite observations. Advanced Materials Technologies wins award for printer parts.

During 2012 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition, Advanced Materials Technologies Pte. Ltd. of Singapore, won award of distinction in industrial motors/controls and hydraulics category for 316L and 440C stainless steel parts used in an industrial printer module. Achieving yield strength rate of 234,000 psi, 440C tabs support and align print head module and are subjected to impact force during printing. NIST Researchers earn presidential honor for research, service.

White House announced 3 researchers at NIST will receive 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Jayne Billmayer Morrow is being honored for pioneering research on properties of microbial systems; Ian Coddington will be recognized for developing rapid, low-cost, spectroscopic measurement tools; and Frank W. DelRio will be honored for pioneering research in measuring mechanical properties of microelectronic and MEMS/NEMS as well as volunteer work. Read More

Aric Newhouse, NAM VP for Policy and Government Relations, issued statement supporting Congressional Replacement of President Obama's Energy-Restricting and Job-Limiting Offshore Drilling Plan Act. According to Newhouse, increasing access to domestic sources of reliable energy is essential to long-term health of manufacturing in the U.S. Studies show that increased oil and gas exploration could add 1.1 million jobs by 2020 and 4 million barrels of oil and natural gas per day. ELFA's MILFI-25 for June 2012 shows new business growth.

Reporting economic activity for $628 billion equipment finance sector in June 2012, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business at $8 billion. This is up 9.5% from same period in 2011, 29% from previous month, and 14.5% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days were down from May and same period in 2011, while charge-offs were up from May and down compared to 2011. Credit approvals increased to 78.7% from 78.3% in May. Read More

ISO Technical Committee to hold meeting on HR in Australia.

ISO Technical Committee, working on international human resource (HR) standards, will hold its second plenary meeting on September 24-25 in Melbourne, Australia. With focus on adopting uniform standards in such areas as terminology, measurement, and governance, ISO TC 260 will explore worldwide HR practices. ANSI serves as Secretariat for ISO TC 260, and meeting will be hosted by Standards Australia (SA). As many as 50 representatives from array of countries are expected to attend. Read More

FAQ Document helps clarify RoHS 2.

European Commission released document detailing Frequently Asked Questions concerning EU's Restrictions on Hazardous Substances Directive 2001/65/EU. RoHS 2 is intended to simplify directive while providing legal clarity and improving enforceability of directive's restrictions on hazardous materials. FAQ document will assist governments, businesses, and other organizations in their analysis of provisions of RoHS 2 to ensure full compliance with new requirements. Read More
