Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) has won Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) Beyond Green High-Performance Building Award for its contribution to Empire State Building retrofit. By showcasing advantages of efficiency retrofits, project offers replicable model for industry. Government's Budget Proposal includes investments in green infrastructure.

On Feb 1, President Obama released FY 2011 budget proposal, which addresses unemployment and rising deficits. Proposal includes many items of interest to landscape architects, including tax incentives for small businesses, investments in green infrastructure for water management, and strengthened Land and Water Conservation Fund program. Conditional Loan Guarantees announced for BrightSource Energy.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced conditional commitments for more than $1.37 billion in loan guarantees under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to BrightSource Energy, Inc. to support construction and start-up of 3 utility-scale concentrated solar power plants. New plants will generate approximately 400 MW of electricity using company's innovative, proprietary technology. AWEA announces release of NE wind integration study.

March 23, 2010

Wind integration study, funded by National Renewable Energy Laboratory, found that NE and other states in Southwest Power Pool region can obtain 40% of electricity from wind energy, while achieving major carbon emissions reductions. It found CO2 emissions dropped by over 25 million tons/yr in moving from 10% to 40% wind power scenario. According to Rob Gramlich of AWEA, large amounts of wind energy can be reliably integrated onto grid at low cost. Read More

Johns Hopkins Study says flies may spread resistant bacteria,

Antibiotic Resistant Enterococci and Staphylococci Isolated from Flies Collected Near Confined Poultry Feeding Operations shows houseflies collected near broiler poultry operations may contribute to spread of drug-resistant bacteria over large distances. Study, conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, was written by lead author and professor Ellen Silbergeld, PhD. Earl Blumenauer (OR-3), directs Secretary of Transportation to assist communities in construction of safe bicycling and pedestrian networks. Bill prioritizes projects in communities that would facilitate modal shifts and connect neighborhoods to such destinations as workplaces, schools, recreation areas, and other community activity centers as well as align with public transportation options. Conditional Commitment Made for Hawaii wind power project.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced that Department of Energy offered conditional commitment on $117 million loan guarantee to finance construction and start-up of 30 MW wind energy project - twelve 2.5 MW wind turbine generators and battery energy storage system - in Kahuku, HI. Industry Leaders push for national renewable energy standard.

Wind energy industry executives called on Congress to pass strong national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) as best way to save and create U.S. jobs. As CEO of American Wind Energy Association, Denise Bode said there is potential for growth if long term support can be garnered. Conservation Groups urge revised LA coastal restoration plan.

In statement to LA Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration, Environmental Defense Fund and others said office should amend its Fiscal Year 2011 draft plan for coastal restoration and hurricane protection. Draft plan lacks details on programs that can reduce risk in near term. Groups said state should identify funding sources, including unused disaster recovery funds, and specific projects for cost-effective, community-based programs that can reduce hurricane risk for residents. Department of Treasury and Department of Energy announced guidance on tax treatment for grantees receiving Recovery Act funding under $3.4 billion Smart Grid Investment Grant program. IRS is providing safe harbor under section 118(a) of Internal Revenue Code for corporations receiving funding under this program. Secretary Chu announces funding for NRG Energy project.

U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu announced today that a project with NRG Energy has been selected to receive up to $154 million, including funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Located in Thompsons, TX, the post-combustion capture and sequestration project will demonstrate advanced technology to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. It will also assist with enhanced oil recovery efforts from nearby oil field. Read More
