Self-Adhesive Membranes Standard approved by ASTM committee.

To ensure product quality and performance for self-adhesive roofing membranes, ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing developed ASTM D7530/D7530M, Specification for Self-Adhesive Glass Fiber Fabric Reinforced Polymer Modified Asphalt Steep Slope Roll Roofing Surfaced with Mineral Granules. According to D08 member Husnu Kalkanoglu, standard "will help define short- and long-term product performance for fiberglass mat reinforced self-adhesive membranes." Read More

Conflict Minerals Identification will impact entire supply shain.

According to chairman of IPC Government Relations Committee Mikel Williams, new reporting requirements on the use of conflict minerals being drafted by U.S. SEC "could have a significant impact on the entire electronics industry supply chain." Fern Abrams, IPC director of government relations and environmental policy, explained IPC is working to modify IPC-1752A, Materials Declaration Management, to address supply chain's need to exchange data on metals derived from conflict minerals. ASTM Standard covers SPI's Resin Identification Code.

Developed by Society of the Plastics Industry in 1988, Resin Identification Code system provides means of sorting different types of plastics from household waste. RIC assigns numeral from 1-7 to piece of plastic to indicate type, and is now described in ASTM International standard, ASTM D7611, Practice for Coding Plastic Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification. ASTM D7611 will be useful for those who buy, sell, and trade waste plastics that have completed their originally intended life. Read More

Glass Builders Certification Program introduced at AAMA show.

AAMA FenestrationMasters(TM) professional certification program was introduced on September 15, during Window and Door Dealers Forum seminar at the 2010 GlassBuild America show. Program's coursework covers subjects such as performance standards, product and material types, and code requirements. Available credentials include Certified Fenestration Master, which requires completion of 50 hr of coursework, and Certified Fenestration Associate, requiring completion of 30 hr of coursework. Construction Materials Prices edge higher in August.

According to Producer Price Index report, prices for construction materials edged up 0.2% in August and are 3.6% higher than 1 year ago. ABC Chief Economist, Anirban Basu says data support notion that nation's recovery in non-residential construction is beginning to stall. For 3 consecutive months, prices for softwood lumber, iron, and steel have been in decline, signaling lack of demand. Pricing power remains weak and there is little reason to believe prices will rise significantly in months ahead. Read More

BIO Official comments on use of genetically engineered salmon.

FDA's Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee hosted discussion about genetically engineered AquAdvantage® Salmon, which are engineered to reach market weight in half time of conventionally raised salmon. Evidence and testimony was presented by independent experts about salmon's safety, effectiveness, and environmental benefits based on data from 14 yr of scientific study. Green Power Challenge aims to help prevent climate change.

U.S. EPA is initiating its national Green Power Community Challenge, which consists of year-long campaign to encourage use of renewable energy and fight climate change. To participate, local governments must join EPA's Green Power Partnership and use green power in amounts that meet purchase requirements. Local government must also conduct campaign to encourage local businesses and residents to collectively buy or produce green power onsite in amounts that meet EPA requirements. Read More

NREL to support development of natural gas engines and vehicles.

September 22, 2010

NREL will partner with CEC and SCAQMD to invest up to $13.5 million to support development of natural gas engines and vehicles. As part of cost-shared projects, companies selected for awards will invest additional $8 million to support $21 million in total projects. Agency will oversee projects to develop efficient natural gas engines that meet or exceed 2010 emission standards, with focus on medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses that represent 22% of fuel used in on-road vehicles.
