IREC releases Solar Market Trends Report.

According to Larry Sherwood, author of 2012 Solar Market Trends Report, solar markets are booming in the U.S., despite some high-profile negative news stories. Falling photovoltaic prices, strong consumer demand, and financial incentives from federal government, states, and utilities meant that twice as much PV solar was installed in 2011, compared to 2010. In fact, growth of total installed capacity of utility and non-residential systems grew by 145% and 132%, respectively. Read More

NEMA issues statement on CFLs and UV emissions.

Recent articles purport that CFLs emit enough UV radiation to cause skin damage. According to David Sliney, PhD, Chairman of the IESNA Photobiological Safety Committee, this is a complex issue that involves not only radiation levels, but distance from light source and exposure time. Based on current knowledge, levels of UV radiation emitted by CFLs are acceptably low and only under unusual conditions will one be exposed to levels above those set by ACGIH. Read More

ASTM International Subcommittee D18.26 will address growing need for consensus standards in energy-related field of hydraulic fracturing. Part of ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, said subcommittee will bring together diverse stakeholders from all sides and points of view relative to hydraulic fracturing to collaborate on development of standards that promote best practices while also serving as steward of environmental resources. Telecommunications Industry Association and Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, in collaboration with 5 international information and communications technology standards developing organizations, have formed oneM2M, dedicated to efficient spread of machine-to-machine communications systems. Group's initial focus will be on creation of common M2M service layer, which could be embedded inside variety of hardware and software to connect devices with global M2M application services. Dennis H. Bradway receives ASTM award.

Dennis H. Bradway, corporate product and standards manager at Mannington Mills Inc in Salem, NJ, received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee F06 on Resilient Floor Coverings. ASTM International member since 1983, Bradway is member at large on F06 executive subcommittee, chairman of Subcommittee F06.40 on Practices, and also works on Committee F13 on Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear. He also received 25 Year Service Award from F06 in 2008. Read More
