BIO Report shows industry growth despite recession.

Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Initiatives 2010 shows that U.S. employment in bioscience sector reached 1.42 million in 2008. Average bioscience job paid $77,595 in 2008, while each one generated additional 5.8 jobs in national economy. According to report, rapid growth was fueled mainly by research, testing, and medical laboratories. States continue to implement policies/programs to support bioscience development despite facing challenging fiscal conditions. Read More

BIO's Board of Directors elected new officers and 9 new board members at BIO 2010 International Convention. BIO's Board of Directors is composed of members of Governing Boards for each of BIO's four sections: Health, Emerging Companies, Industrial and Environmental, and Food and Agriculture. John Spengler receives EPA Environmental Achievement Award.

John Spengler, Ph.D, Principal of Environmental Health and Engineering, Inc., was presented Lifetime Achievement Merit Award by U.S. EPA at 40-year EPA Earth Day Celebration. Award recognizes effort both John Spengler and George Buckley have made in engaging students and shaping current thinking on environmental matters. Dr. Spengler also serves as Akira Yamaguchi Professor of Environmental Health and Human Habitation within Department of Environmental Health at Harvard School of Public Health. Read More

DOE Honors NREL for 20 years of Science Bowl support.

US Department of Energy (DOE) presented National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with 2 awards for its 20-year support of National Science Bowl. Awards were given by Energy Secretary Stephen Chu at finals for Science Bowl Competition in Washington D.C. In addition to honoring NREL's consistent sponsorship, awards honored NREL Education Programs Coordinator Linda Lung for her organization of middle school competition and running of middle school hydrogen and solar car races. Robotics Entrepreneur Rodney Brooks receives SME's highest honor.

Rodney Brooks, PhD, is founder, chairman, and chief technology officer of Heartland Robotics Inc. He is also founder, board member, and former CTO of iRobot Corp. In acknowledgement of his work with robotics, Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announced Brooks will receive SME Honorary Membership. Mark C. New FAA Aircraft Tracking System is implemented in Juneau..

FAA has implemented Wide-Area Augmentation System (WAM) that allows air traffic controllers to track aircraft along mountainous approach to Juneau, AK. System enables controllers to decrease separation between planes to 5 nautical miles. Utilizing network of sensors that uses signals to detect aircraft transponders, system displays locations of planes onscreen. It will serve as backup in event of GPS outage when Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast is deployed nationwide in 2013. Read More

EPA proposes plans for coal ash regulation..

EPA is proposing first-ever national rules for safe disposal and management of coal ash from coal-fired power plants. New rules enforce protective controls, such as liners and groundwater monitoring, at landfills, and liners/oversight of structural integrity at impoundments to protect against contaminants hazardous to human health. Proposal also calls for public comment on 2 approaches for addressing risks of coal ash management under Resource Recovery and Conservation Act. Read More

NREL Assessment highlights green utility power leaders.

U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) annual assessment of leading utility green power programs indicates there are 850+ utilities across U.S. that offer green power programs. Utility green power sales in 2009 exceeded 6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) and represent more than 5% of total electricity sales for some of most popular programs. Wind energy represents ~2/3 of electricity generated for green energy programs nationwide. Read More

Passenger Revenue, Cargo Traffic detailed in ATA report.

Based on sample group of carriers, ATA report showed passenger revenue rose 15.4% in March versus same month in 2009. Approximately 1.4% more passengers traveled on U.S. airlines in March, while average price to fly one mile rose 11.7%. Growth spanned all regions in international markets, with passenger revenues rising 19.6%. Also, U.S. airlines saw cargo traffic rise 14% year over year (4% domestically and 23% internationally) in February 2010, driven by increased international trade. Read More
