Single Photon Detector counts photons at 99% efficiency.

Scientists at NIST have developed world's most efficient single photon detector, which is able to count individual particles of light traveling through fiber optic cables with 99% efficiency rate. Ability to count individual photons is valuable to designers of certain types of quantum computers as well as scientists engaged in quantum optical experiments. One of the most promising potential applications is securing long-distance data transmission against unwanted interception. Read More

State of Domestic Manufacturing is discussed in white paper.

In discussing state of U.S. manufacturing and characteristics of good manufacturers, white paper by Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership Advisory Board finds reasons for concern as well as optimism regarding industry's future. Paper plots course to improve competitiveness, pointing out that innovation alone is not enough. NEMA, AIA Renew Call for commercial building tax reduction.

April 16, 2010

NEMA and AIA renewed their call on Congress to support increasing Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction from $1.80/ft² to $3/ft² to help stimulate immediate job creation. As NEMA President and CEO, Evan R. Gaddis indicated this increase would provide job-stimulating incentive to retrofit and renovate existing commercial buildings. Over 80 manufacturing, construction, and environmental organizations have co-signed letter to Congressional members asking for this increase. Read More

BIO announced Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) as Legislator of the Year for 2009-2010. Hatch, who received this award as part of BIO's 2010 Legislative Day Fly-In, was honored for his "long-standing service to the Finance Committee and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee." NBB urges Congress to reinstate biodiesel tax incentive.

NBB released letter to Congressional Leadership urging Congress to take immediate action to retroactively reinstate biodiesel tax incentive. NBB spearheaded letter and was joined by several organizations representing U.S. biodiesel industry, fuel marketers and retailers, as well as agriculture stakeholders. Tax incentive makes biodiesel price competitive with conventional diesel fuel, and lapse of incentive has caused severe retraction in domestic production and use of clean-burning biodiesel. Scheduled for May 7, ANSI Caucus Luncheon will feature guest speaker George Arnold, Ph.D., national coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability at NIST. Dr. Arnold is responsible for leading development of standards underpinning nation's Smart Grid. He served as Chairman of ANSI's Board of Directors from 2003-2005 and as president of IEEE Standards Association in 2007-2008. ANSI invites submittals World Accreditation Day competition.

ANSI invites interested stakeholders to participate in U.S. Celebration of World Accreditation Day on June 9, by submitting paper of no more than 2,000 words that highlights value of accreditation in facilitating acceptance of products, services, and professional credentials across borders. Best paper will be awarded $1,000 prize and will be published, along with second- and third-place papers, on ANSI website. Paper submissions are due by April 30. Read More

NASPO to develop standard for personal identity verification.

North American Security Products Organization (NASPO) notified ANSI of its intent to develop an American National Standard on identity verification, and formal announcement was published in ANSI's Standards Action. Proposed standard will define due process and methods for verification of personal identity related to issuance of primary U.S. identity documents, and assurance levels required for enrollment in major identity management systems. Technical report ISO/TR 7250-2:2010, "Basic human body measurements for technological design - Part 2: Statistical summaries of body measurements from individual ISO populations," compiles average measurements of people from around world. AIA announced nation's top 100 student rocketry teams that will compete in final round of Team America Rocketry Challenge, which will take place May 15. Qualifying teams of students have chance to earn $60,000 in scholarships and prizes, and TARC champion will win chance to compete internationally at air show near London in July. FMA names 2010 FMA/CNA Safety Award winners.

FMA's winners for Safety Award of Honor include 11 companies recognized for having no recordable injuries/illnesses during reporting period. Awarded to 19 organizations, Safety Award of Merit went to companies that posted an injury/illness incidence rate that was at least 10% better than the rate published by BLS. FMA also named winners of 2010 Safety Honorable Mention Award and 2010 Most Improved Safety Record. To be eligible, companies were required to submit OSHA Form 300A. Read More
