WG 15 Meeting addresses cylinders and tubes for hydrogen storage.

A new work item on Gaseous hydrogen - Cylinders and tubes for stationary storage has begun in ISO/TC 197. Working Group 15 met for first time to discuss draft scope. Standard will cover pressure vessels up to max water capacity of 10,000 L and max pressure of 110 MPa, of seamless metallic construction or of composite construction. Task groups were formed to address conditions of use, composite cycling and composites stress rupture, and hydrogen embrittlement. Read More

DOE gives awards for hydrogen codes and standards.

Serving as Chief Engineer responsible for product reliability and safety at UTC Power and as Manager of ONSI Engineering for United Technologies, Glenn Scheffler has helped develop codes and standards for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. Dr. Chris Sloane, advocate for incorporation of science and performance-based requirements in regulations, codes, and standards, has served as technical resource for DOE in on-going development of Global Technical Regulations for hydrogen vehicle systems. Durable Goods drive up manufacturing in May.

According to Federal Reserve, manufacturing production increased by 0.8% in May, driven by 1.7% rise in durable goods production. Gains were widespread, with 9 of 11 industries increasing last month. Two of the fastest growing industries, wood products and furniture, are likely benefiting from end of homebuyer tax credit in April. Two industries that declined were aerospace, which tends to jump around from month-to-month more than other sectors, and electrical equipment and appliances. Read More

According to market study data, demand for residential windows and skylights is expected to increase, while residential door market will remain stagnant. ASTM Standard aids in measurement of system friction forces.

Useful to slide and engine companies, as well as makers of bushing materials, ASTM G203, Guide for Determining Friction Energy Dissipation in Reciprocating Tribosystems, was developed by Subcommittee G02.50 on Friction, part of ASTM International Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion. Guide will be useful in testing because single number can be used to describe friction behavior of reciprocating tribosystem and that number will include all of the system responses. Read More

Second Quarter 2010 issue of The MHEDA Journal includes point/counterpoint between Dan Dwyer, VP and General Manager of industrial truck battery supplier Sackett Systems, and Warren Brower, Product Marketing Manager at Plug Power Inc., a manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cells. According to Dwyer, fuel cells have not yet proven their return on investment to material handling end-users. TRFA announces 2010 Annual Meeting Chair.

TRFA announced that Dr. Krish Vora, Senior Research Specialist with Electrical Market Division of 3M, will serve as Chair of 2010 Annual Meeting, to be held September 12-14. Dr. Vora joined 3M in 1981, and in 1988 he joined Electrical Market Division where he developed products in area of cold-shrink, rubber and plastic tapes, thermoset epoxy and polyurethane resins, mastics and sealants, and heat-shrink. AASHTO Transportation Awards presented to 4 state DOTs.

America's Transportation Awards Northeast regional competition winners include New York State, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Connecticut DOTs. John Horsley of AASHTO says awards highlight work being done by state DOTs and provide examples of benefits from investments made through Recovery Act. PMMI and AMI announce strategic partnership.

Partnership between PMMI and American Meat Institute (AMI) will address mutual concerns such as safety standards and issues related to meat packaging/processing. As part of the agreement, AMI will participate in PMMI's Allied Association Program and exhibit at PACK EXPO International 2010. Also, PMMI will exhibit in 2011 AMI International Meat, Poultry, and Seafood Convention and Exposition. Both organizations have agreed to cross-promote their participation in their partner's events. Proposed Protective Standard addresses soft toe shoe safety.

ASTM International Committee F13 on Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear is working on new standard concerning footwear for workers who do not necessarily need safety toe shoes but could use other protection such as puncture resistance, electrical shock protection, and electrical grounding. This standard - ASTM WK27855, Specification for Performance Requirements for Soft Toe Protective Footwear (Non-Safety/Non-Protective Toe) - is being developed by Subcommittee F13.30 on Footwear. EPA Program will help state capital cities design sustainable communities.

Greening America's Capitals program will assist state capitals develop vision of environmentally friendly neighborhoods that incorporate green building and green infrastructure. Design assistance will be given to up to 4 cities per year to help them use sustainable designs to develop neighborhoods with multiple social, economic, and environmental benefits.
