NEMA endorses DoE collaboration with IDB.

In significant move to facilitate implementation of projects, policy reform, and knowledge dissemination across Americas, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu has signed Memorandum of Understanding with Inter-American Development Bank President, Luis Alberto Moreno to help launch Energy Innovation Center. Energy Efficiency Projects concentrate on commercial buildings.

US Department of Energy announced support for energy-saving commercial building projects in United States. With money from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, DOE's national laboratories will select and fund technical experts to provide technical guidance to commercial building owners and operators. International Teams collaborate on renewable energy technology.

Research collaboration agreement, signed between US Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Tenerrdis, will promote joint effort towards solar energy, smart grid, and battery technology research. Aiming to increase deployment and reduce costs of renewable energy, memorandum of understanding (MOU) details cooperation in terms of exchange of expertise, participation in joint projects and research, as well as mutual support in technology transfer. ASHRAE Supports Buildings Personnel Training Act of 2010.

Introduced on Earth Day, Federal Building Personnel Training Act of 2010 will provide training for Federal building personnel regarding areas of building operations and maintenance, energy management, safety, and design functions. ASHRAE president Gordon Holness called this piece of important legislation "an example for the rest of the nation." ASA Warehouse Operations Seminar met with success in 3 locations.

American Supplpy Association Education Foundation's Essentials of Profitable Warehouse Operations certificate course, offered via one-day seminars, took place in Findlay, Ohio; Bloomington, MN; and Downers Grove, IL. Addressing frequently mentioned issues, Jason Bader of The Distribution Team, Inc. led groups through program of instruction, discussions, and exercises that summarized highlights of 9-chapter course. SME announces format change for Canadian Manufacturing Week.

Canadian Manufacturing Week 2010, October 5-7, will take place at Toronto Congress Centre. Event will feature three-zoned format that groups latest manufacturing technologies and solutions into Weld Expo Canada, The Advanced Manufacturing Zone, and The Physical Asset Management Zone. IPC Workshops to highlight updates to key standards.

IPC will hold The Impact of Updates to J-STD-001 on May 17 in Irvine, CA; May 19 in San Jose, CA; October 12 in Boston; and October 14 in Toronto, each to be followed by full-day sessions covering changes to IPC-A-610. The Impact of Updates to IPC-A-600 and IPC-6012 will be held June 8 in Irvine, CA; and June 10 in San Jose. PMA releases Business Conditions Report for April 2010.

According to April 2010 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies expect business conditions to remain steady during next 3 months. Report shows that 45% of participants expect improvement in economic activity during next 3 months, while 45% predict that activity will remain unchanged. Companies also forecast continued positive momentum in incoming orders, and 61% of participants report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago. Read More

ATA names Tom Hendricks as VP of Operations and Safety.

ATA announced Captain Tom Hendricks will be joining association as VP of Operations and Safety, effective June 1. Hendricks will assume all leadership responsibilities for U.S. airline industry's operations, safety, engineering, and air traffic functions. "It is an exciting time for the industry, particularly with significant structural changes to our aviation systems on the horizon," said Hendricks, who was previously employed as director of line operations for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta. During annual business meeting for AMCA's European Region Members, there was a presentation given by Mr. Guido de Wilt, and Mr. Martijn van Elburg of the European Commission DG Energy and Transport on "Impending Ecodesign Regulation for Fans." Highlights of presentation included Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC, Energy Labeling Directive 92/75/EEC, Energy Star program for office equipment, Ecolabel Regulation (EC) No 1980/2000, and Energy performance of Buildings Directive 2002/91/EC. ASTM presents Dr. Chris Ingersoll with Award of Merit.

Chris Ingersoll, Ph.D., aquatic toxicologist at Columbia Environmental Research Center has been honored with Award of Merit and title of fellow from ASTM International Committee E47 on Biological Effects and Environmental Fate. An active member of ASTM since 1987, Ingersoll is past chair of Committee E47 and leads Subcommittee E47.03 on Sediment Assessment and Toxicology. In his current role, Ingersoll conducts research to develop methods for assessing bioavailability of contaminants in sediment. Read More

Dean Neubauer, Senior Engineering Associate at Corning, Inc., has been awarded with 2010 ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. Neubauer was recognized for contributions/leadership in publications and in developing standards related to statistical methods and quality control. Member of ASTM International and Committee E11 since 1993, he also chairs Subcommittee E11.30 on Statistical Quality Control and is fellow of American Society for Quality. Read More

Recently, AMCA Executive Director, Barbara Morrison attended AMCA's Pacific Rim Region Business Meeting and Dinner, which was held in conjunction with China Refrigeration Expo in Beijing, China. Mr. C.F. Yang of Kruger Asia, the longtime Pacific Rim Chair stepped down and AMCA Regional members appointed the new Pacific Rim Region Chair, Ms. Bek Siew Hup, of Azen Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. Proposed ASTM Engine Coolant Standards focus on use of glycerin.

Series of proposed standards being developed by ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants would remove technical barriers that currently prevent cost-effective replacement of ethylene glycol with more environmentally friendly glycerin in antifreeze. Proposed standards include ASTM WK22966, Test Method for Determination of Glycerin Assay by Titrimetric and ASTM WK22967, Test Method for Determination of Fatty Acids and Esters in Glycerin. ASTM E2722, Test Method for Using Seeded-Agar for the Screening Assessment of Antimicrobial Activity in Fabric and Air Filter Media is under jurisdiction of Subcommittee E35.15 on Antimicrobial Agents. Development of the standard was inspired by need for rapid, qualitative screening method that would allow assessment of antimicrobial activity of low water solubility antimicrobials that may not demonstrate typical zone of inhibition observed in other conventional chemistries.
