ISO Technical Report compares body measurements around world.

Technical report ISO/TR 7250-2:2010, "Basic human body measurements for technological design - Part 2: Statistical summaries of body measurements from individual ISO populations," compiles average measurements of people from around world. Identifying physical variations in human body sizes and shapes by country, view of population diversity can help manufacturers optimize product designs accordingly. Team America Rocketry Challenge to take place May 15.

AIA announced nation's top 100 student rocketry teams that will compete in final round of Team America Rocketry Challenge, which will take place May 15. Qualifying teams of students have chance to earn $60,000 in scholarships and prizes, and TARC champion will win chance to compete internationally at air show near London in July. Goal of contest is to bolster student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields and attract more young people into aerospace careers. Read More

NAM Chief Economist joins AP's Board of Economists.

FMA names 2010 FMA/CNA Safety Award winners.

April 14, 2010

FMA's winners for Safety Award of Honor include 11 companies recognized for having no recordable injuries/illnesses during reporting period. Awarded to 19 organizations, Safety Award of Merit went to companies that posted an injury/illness incidence rate that was at least 10% better than the rate published by BLS. FMA also named winners of 2010 Safety Honorable Mention Award and 2010 Most Improved Safety Record. To be eligible, companies were required to submit OSHA Form 300A. Read More

To help electronics manufacturing companies manage growing documentation required to ensure products comply with evolving environmental regulations, IPC has released IPC-1752A, Materials Declaration Management. Revision provides updated industry-wide reporting format for material declaration data exchange between companies in electronic interconnect supply chain. Jack Bramel receives highest level of member recognition.

In recognition of extraordinary contributions to IPC and electronic interconnect industry, countless hours of volunteer service on IPC standards development committees, and exceptional lifetime achievement, Jack Bramel was awarded 2009 IPC Raymond E. Pritchard Hall of Fame Award. Bramel has been involved in IPC for more than 40 years. He co-chaired committee that released first IPC printed board process standard in 1974, and has chaired IPC task group that works with UL and CSA since 1975. Read More

Consultant Frank Sinibaldi of Stow, Ohio, has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics, which is responsible for 26 ASTM standards that promote appropriate use of principles and methods of statistic and quality control in standards. Sinibaldi is a consultant in areas of Lean, Six Sigma, quality management and its strategic roles in applied statistics and statistical methods, problem solving, and quality control and assurance. Iron Castings Committee elects William LeVan as chairman.

ASTM International Committee A04 on Iron Castings has elected William LeVan, EVP of the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute in Atlanta, as its new chairman. The 140-member committee is responsible for approximately 50 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, LeVan spent nearly 20 years as regional sales manager at U.S. Pipe and Foundry Co. LeVan also leads Subcommittees A04.12 on Pipes and Tubes and A04.94 on Long Range Planning. Read More

Electroindustrty Firms Report improved business conditions.

According to electrical equipment manufacturers polled in NEMA's business confidence survey, business environment has improved since December 2009. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions rose in March 2010 for its third straight month, increasing 7.2 points to 71.7. This may prove small in absolute terms, as average intensity of change in business conditions reported in survey held steady in March at +0.5 on 0 to +5 range. Read More

Small Business receives major NextGen engineering contract.

FAA announced CSSI, Inc. has won contract to perform engineering work that will help transform and modernize US airspace system into Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). This $280 million contract is first of up to 6 that will be awarded under umbrella portfolio called System Engineering 2020 (SE-2020), which has ceiling of $7 billion. ASTM names Mark Nelson chair of Committee F10.

Mark Nelson, Director of Commodities at Kansas Farm Bureau in Manhattan, Kan., has been named as Chairman of ASTM International Committee F10 on Livestock, Meat, and Poultry Evaluation Systems. Nelson has been member of ASTM International since 2003, serves on five of F10's eight subcommittees, and is Vice Chair of Subcommittee F10.50 on Terminology. After graduating Kansas State University, he worked there as NW area economist and began working at Kansas Farm Bureau in 1997. Read More

Thomas Langill, Ph.D., technical director at American Galvanizers Association, was elected chairman of ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products for one 2-year term. As member of ASTM International since 1994, Langill has chaired Subcommittee A05.13 on Structural Shapes and Hardware Specifications and has been active member of several ASTM committees.
