NIST SBIR Awards have been given to 12 companies.

As announced by NIST, 12 U.S. businesses received nearly $2 million in Phase I and Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards in order to help develop technologies that could lead to commercial and public benefit. SBIR program's goal is for companies to commercialize their technologies, where appropriate, in Phase III. NIST will provide awardees with technical and direct assistance and direct them to additional resources through Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Read More

ANSI-IREC Program issues first set of accreditations.

Three certificate-awarding entities have been accredited under ANSI-IREC pilot program for personnel training/education programs within energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. They include CalCERTS for training of Home Energy Rating System raters; CleanTech Education for training focused on solar photovoltaics and heating, energy efficiency, wind energy, green IT, and smart grid; and Midwest Renewable Energy Association, providing training related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. EPRI, Newton Labs work to profile used nuclear fuel assemblies.

Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) and Newton Research Labs, Inc. have teamed together to develop underwater laser scanning tool to measure individual alignment profile of used nuclear fuel assemblies. First successful demonstration of said technology was recently completed, and second phase of development/deployment will be announced in near future. After system is validated, it will be extended to also enable measurement of PWR fuel assemblies. Read More

Temporary Fuel Waiver supports 8 states impacted by hurricane.

September 7, 2012

As requested by Governors, EPA exercised its authority under Clean Air Act to temporarily waive certain federal clean gasoline requirements for gasoline sold and distributed in LA, MI, AL, GA, FL, TN, SC, and NC due to disruption in supply of fuel from Gulf-area refineries following Hurricane Isaac. Waiver granted by EPA in coordination with Department of Energy (DOE) will help ensure adequate supply of gasoline in impacted states until normal supply can be restored. Read More

NREL Summer Interns acquire lab experience.

September 7, 2012

For 10 weeks every summer, college students from across the country migrate to Golden, Colorado, to work side-by-side with top researchers at NREL, the only national laboratory solely focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. This summer, there were 4 different programs and 59 interns, including, for the first time, community college students. The largest program was the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship. NREL Selects HP, Intel as Partners for HPC data center project.

NREL selected HP and Intel to provide HPC system dedicated to energy systems integration, renewable energy research, and energy efficiency technologies. Set to reside at Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) under construction on Golden, CO campus, $10 million HPC system will expand modeling and simulation capabilities for advancing materials research and developing deeper understanding of biological and chemical processes as well as research into integrated energy systems. EPA opens registration for Campus RainWorks Challenge.

U.S. EPA has opened registration for student teams from colleges and universities across the country to participate in Campus RainWorks Challenge, through which teams will compete to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. First annual competition will help raise awareness of green design and planning approaches at colleges and universities, and train next generation of landscape architects, planners, and engineers in green infrastructure principles and design.
