Electric Utility Plans improve coal ash impoundment safety.

US EPA is releasing action plans developed by 16 electric utility facilities with coal ash impoundments, describing measures they are taking to make impoundments safer. These action plans are in response to EPA's final assessment reports on structural integrity of impoundments that the agency made public in February. Additionally, EPA is releasing assessment reports on structural integrity of 37 additional coal ash impoundments at 15 facilities across country. Read More

ANSI Approved Accreditor Status is designated by U.S. DoD.

ANSI has been named approved accreditor of certification bodies by U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for Information Assurance (IA) Workforce Improvement Program. Designation is stated in revisions to manual issued under DoD Directive 8570.1, Information Assurance Training, Certification, and Workforce Management. Institute has accredited 30 personnel certification bodies involved in DoD program through its own Personnel Certification Accreditation Program, begun in 2003. Read More

Workholding Shipments are up 8.1% from fourth quarter 2009.

According to AMT Advanced Workholding Technologies (AWT) Group's Workholding Market Data Report, first quarter 2010 shipments of workholding equipment were at $50.0 million which is up 10.7% from first quarter 2009. Report also shows domestic workholding equipment shipments increased 13.6% and U.S. exports decreased 15.5% from fourth quarter 2009. Additionally, first quarter 2010 employment levels were up 2.7% from fourth quarter 2009 but down 9.8% compared to first quarter of 2009. Read More

ASQ/Metrus Survey shows impact of customer service cuts.

Led by ASQ and Metrus Group, national survey on how various recession-survival tactics affect employees shows that cutting internal and external customer service causes most damage. Compiling data from 2,100 U.S. companies, survey says customer service cuts cause more damage than layoffs; pay cuts, pay freezes, and benefits reductions; and mandatory furloughs. NEMA-Backed Carbon Monoxide Bill signed into law in California.

On May 7, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010 (SB 183) was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. SB 183 requires existing homes and dwelling units to be outfitted with carbon monoxide alarms beginning July 2011. According to NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis, enactment of this bill and adoption of similar provisions in 2010 state codes will reduce likelihood of carbon monoxide poisoning and protect health and safety of California's families and tourists. Industrial Control Equipment Shipments rise in first quarter 2010.

NEMA Primary Industrial Controls Index climbed 11.7%, quarter-to-quarter, during first 3 months of 2010. While it has increased in each of last 3 quarters, latest gain marks largest percentage increase since second quarter 2010. Industrial control shipments also increased on year-over-year basis for first time since 2008 quarter 3, with increase of 11% percent compared to first quarter of 2009. Inflation- and seasonally-adjusted shipments remain nearly 23% below cyclical peak. Read More

NREL's Dynamometer tests Samsung's wind turbine drive train.

Outfitted with 3,550 hp electric motor coupled to 3-stage epicyclic gearbox, 2.5 MW dynamometer at U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory blasted 12.6 million lb-in. of torque at Samsung's 185,000 lb wind turbine drive train. Samsung officials wanted to learn how well their 250 ft high wind turbines would survive 25 years of gales, gusts, rain, rust, cyclones, and dust. NEMA Intervention Permitted in challenge to EPA GHG regulation.

US Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit granted motion of NEMA and other state/national business organizations to intervene as one party in pending case to review US EPA's decision to regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from stationary sources through Clean Air Act. Specifically, petition seeks review of EPA's December 7, 2009 "Endangerment Finding" determination. "We don't believe EPA asked all of the right questions," stated NEMA President and CEO Evan R. NAM Economist Responds to April Industrial Production Report.

NAM Chief Economist Dave Huether commented on Federal Reserve Industrial Production report, which said manufacturing production rose 1.1% in April - the third increase in 4 months. Huether called this "an encouraging sign" and said this upturn was most likely driven by housing, business inventories, exports, and business investment. Expecting pace of manufacturing recovery to moderate in coming months, Huether said pre-recession manufacturing will not be attained until late 2011. Read More

A team from Penn Manor High School in Millersville, PA took first place at Eighth Annual Team America Rocketry Challenge, earning title of national champion. Four-member team won world's largest rocket contest after spending months designing, building, and test launching their model rocket. American Power Act addresses America's energy needs.

The Alliance to Save Energy praised Sens. John Kerry and Joseph Lieberman for releasing text of American Power Act, legislation that intends to cut carbon pollution by 17% below 2005 levels by 2020 and by 83% by 2050. In addition to broad limits on carbon emissions, bill provides allocations of funding from carbon allowances for energy efficiency. EPA's Envirofacts has more than 6,300 chemicals added to database.

As part of Administrator Lisa P. Jackson's commitment to increase public access to information on chemicals, U.S. EPA has added more than 6,300 chemicals and 3,800 chemical facilities regulated under Toxic Substances Control Act to public database called Envirofacts. Database is EPA's single point of access on the Internet for information about environmental activities that may affect air, water, and land in U.S. and provides tools for analyzing data. Read More

EPA/Coast Guard approve use of dispersant at BP oil leak.

U.S. Coast Guard and EPA have authorized BP to use dispersants underwater at source of Deepwater Horizon leak. Dispersants are chemicals that break down oil into small drops and prevent it from reaching surface or U.S. shoreline. They are less harmful than oil and biodegrade in much shorter time. Federal government will require regular analysis of dispersant effectiveness and environmental/human impacts, and can discontinue method if negative impacts outweigh benefits. Read More
