NASA Data provides hands-on approach at teacher workshop.

At workshop hosted by Hampton University, NASA, and Puerto Rico NASA Space Grant Consortium, teachers were given tools to study particles in the air in their own neighborhoods and analyze how those particles, also known as aerosols, affect local and global climate. When teachers return home, they can continue to work with scientists to conduct atmospheric investigations and make comparisons with data collected by NASA satellites, which is publicly available through program called MY NASA DATA. SAE Vehicle Battery Summit to take place in Shanghai, China.

SAE International 2010 Vehicle Battery Summit, to take place September 1-3, 2010, will be organized by SAE, Advanced Automotive Batteries, Inc., and China Automotive Technology and Research Center. To be chaired by Dr. Menahem Anderman, it will focus on large-format Li-Ion battery technology for use in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. Summit will feature speakers from major car makers, battery manufacturers, and representatives of China government ministries. Read More

Performance Standards for Wood Heaters is being revised by EPA.

US EPA is revising its New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) for Wood Heaters. Every indication is that proposed ASTM International standard ASTM WK27994, Test Method for Determining Particulate Matter Emissions from Wood Heaters, will be included. While EPA test methods embedded in current NSPS have not been revised in last 20 years, time for change was realized by willingness of technical staff to work to develop improved, consensus-based test methods for use going forward. Proposed Standard covers electrical conductor code words.

Proposed standard ASTM WK28737, Specification for Electrical Overhead Conductor Code Word Names, will list code word names and provide means to register and publish new code words. Code word names identify conductor diameter and mass as well as conductor stranding. Specific Canadian designs will also be included, along with reference to appropriate Canadian Standards Association standard. Read More

Road/Paving Materials Standard addresses safe sample gathering.

Proposed standard ASTM WK26774, Practice for Sampling Bituminous Paving Material from a Truck by Means of a Mechanical Sampling Device, addresses safety concerns and need to obtain representative samples. It will enable user to collect more useful sample from almost any location within truck bed and deposit it in sample collection device sitting on ground. Primary users of ASTM WK26774, once it has been approved, will be asphalt producers wishing to obtain better samples in safer way. Read More

Manufacturers support creation of export control entity.

According to Frank Vargo, NAM VP for International Economic Affairs, NAM is pleased with announcement to create single entity to administer export controls and believes that this will better equip U.S. to protect national security, strengthen defense industrial base, and double exports over next 5 years. Darrin Drollinger named executive director of ASABE.

Elected to new position by ASABE Board of Trustees at Society's 2010 Annual International Meeting, Darrin Drollinger will serve as ASABE's executive officer as well as secretary to Society and to ASABE Foundation. Drollinger is a 21-year member of ASABE with more than 20 years of experience in association management. He graduated from Ohio State University with degree in agricultural engineering and also holds an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago. Read More

Improving Electroindustry Business Conditions are broad but modestly paced.

NEMA Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions climbed 1.6 points from May to June to reach 70.4. Average degree of change in business conditions cited in survey was unchanged in June, holding at +0.7 for third straight month. Although EBCI for future North American conditions dropped 6.7 points to 70.4, it remains above 50 point threshold indicative of broad-based expansion. Read More

U.S. Farmer Biotech Crops Adoption continues to rise.

USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) report, Adoption of Genetically Engineered Crops in the U.S., was released July 1, 2010. Key findings show that adoption of GE soybeans, GE cotton, and all biotech corn respectively reached 93%, 93%, and 86%. In response, BIO's Sharon Bomer Lauritsen said this data "provides more evidence that U.S. farmers continue to value biotech varieties...for the economic and environmental benefits they provide." Merit and Kessler Awards were given to Michael D. Lewis.

ASTM International Committee C18 on Dimension Stone honored Michael D. Lewis, President of Facade Forensics Inc., with 2010 Award of Merit and Daniel W. Kessler Award for contributions to dimension stone industry standards development. Member of ASTM since 1989, Lewis served as C18 secretary and vice chairman. He currently chairs Subcommittee C18.06 on Attachment Components and Systems and also works on Committees C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units and E06 on Performance of Buildings. Read More

AIA makes statement on WTO subsidies decision.

AIA welcomes final ruling of World Trade Organization 316 Panel, which affirmed U.S. claims that subsidies provided to Airbus, particularly in form of launch aid, have harmed U.S. industry, that EU governments must withdraw those subsidies and provide redress to U.S., and that this practice of systematic subsidization must be abandoned going forward. ASTM Padlock Specification revised by Security Systems Committee.

To help prevent rise in bumping-related incidents, Subcommittee F12.50 on Locking Devices has recently revised ASTM F883, Performance Specification for Padlocks, to include method of measuring resistance of particular locking technology to bump attack. Addition of bump test allows users to be aware of where their locks qualify for bump resistance or if they have any bump resistant technology in them at all. Read More

Hydraulic Institute seeks reviewers for updated pump standard.

Hydraulic Institute, under approval of ANSI, is seeking qualified individuals in North America to participate in review process for draft of updated standard ANSI/HI 11.6 - Submersible Pump Tests. This revision requires that submersible pumps be guaranteed and tested as complete units. Standard does not identify individual sources of losses within boundary of submersible pump unit. It includes details that state how acceptance testing shall be performed and defines pump acceptance criteria. Read More
