NTSB Safety Recommendations look at fatigue management.

August 23, 2012

Supplementing reiterations, NTSB issued 3 new safety recommendations to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. These included H-12-29, for establishing ongoing program to monitor, evaluate, report on, and continuously improve fatigue management programs; H-12-30, for incorporating scientifically based fatigue mitigation strategies into hours-of-service regulations; and H-12-30, for reviewing each new entrant motor carrier structured process as component of new entrant safety audits. ICP Staff attends Valor Games Career Fair in Chicago.

More than 1,000 job seekers attended Veterans Career Hiring Event held at Chicago's Soldier Field. Event was held in conjunction with second annual Valor Games, where more than 150 ex-military, disabled athletes competed in events such as shot-put, archery, rowing, and recumbent cycling. Industrial Careers Pathway® was there with booth to raise awareness about career options available in industrial distribution and to encourage job seekers to post resumes to ICP Job Board. Read More

David Styers Jr. receives Copper Club Award.

David Styers Jr., VP of technical product and processes at Wolverine Tube Inc. in Decatur, AL, has received Copper Club Award from ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys. Established in 1979, award is presented to individuals who have done the most to advance standardization of copper and copper alloys. Styers has been a member of Committee B05 since 1992. He currently serves as first vice chairman of main committee and chairs Subcommittee B05.94 on Strategic Planning. Read More

Sinclair Oil Penalty will resolve 2008 consent decree violations.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced settlement with 2 subsidiaries of Sinclair Oil Corporation to resolve alleged violations of air pollution limits established in 2008 consent decree at Casper and Sinclair, WY refineries. Stipulated penalties to be paid total $3,844,000, and required spending for additional pollution control equipment and other projects will total ~$10.5 million. Settlement also requires reductions of NOx, SO2, and particulate matter emissions. Read More

Pesticide Symposium to focus on sustainability, chemists' roles.

Scheduled for October 23-25, 33rd Symposium on Pesticide Formulation and Delivery Systems will be held in Atlanta, GA. This 2012 symposium will address sustainability as well as roles formulation chemists play therein. Along with new pesticide, adjuvant, fertilizer, and related agrichemical product formulations, forums will focus on chemistry and physical properties of chemicals used in manufacturing said formulations as well as delivery systems. SPE Committee announces winners of graduate scholarship awards.

Organizing committee for SPE Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition announced winners of group's annual SPE ACCE Graduate Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 academic year. Winning students whose composites-intensive projects were judged to have greatest potential impact on ground transportation were John Hofmann, who is working on a doctorate in Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Virginia Tech and Alper Kiziltas who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Forest Resources at University of Maine.
