IEEE Accelerated Stress Testing Committee to hold meeting in October.

IEEE's technical committee on Accelerated Stress Testing and Reliability (ASTR) has issued call for presentations for its 15th Annual ASTR Workshop, to be held October 6-8, 2010. Themed Bridging the Gap from Laboratory to Field, workshop will provide forum to share ideas on limiting and eliminating product field failures. Focus will be on finding design weaknesses and improving strategies to screen defects/weaknesses in electronic, optoelectronic, photonic, and electro-mechanical hardware. Read More

At Industry Awards Banquet on March 23 during CastExpo'10, winners of NADCA's annual Safety Award Program were recognized for having exceeded or met industry criteria to operate safe working environment for their employees. Perfect Award recognized facilities that operated all of 2009 without one reportable injury or illness, and Outstanding Award honored operations whose reportable injury or illness level was below national average of 7% for all manufacturing. This applies specifically to ANSI/ASABE S593, Terminology and Definitions for Biomass Production, Harvesting and Collection, Storage, Processing, Conversion and Utilization, which was originally developed 5 years ago to provide uniform terminology and definitions in general area of biomass production and utilization. EPA proposes to expand Montreal Protocol scope to HFCs.

EPA has announced collaboration between U.S., Canada, and Mexico in proposing to expand scope of Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Proposal would phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and includes proposal by EPA to use isobutane, propane, HCR-188C, and HCR-188C1 refrigerants as substitutes in U.S. household/commercial refrigerators and freezers. Benefits, based on EPA analysis, would be equal to removing gas emissions from 59 million cars each year through 2020. Read More

One announcement after another in aerospace market has revealed momentum shift regarding manufacturing in Quebec, just in time for Montreal Manufacturing Technology Show. Renewed interest is confirmed by SME's economic outlook survey of manufacturers in Quebec on their future spending plans and views on industry recovery. Individuals can attain certification as machine vision professional (basic level) through AIA's new program. To earn Certified Vision Professional (CVP) status, individuals need to pass test based on basic tutorial programs AIA offers in fundamentals of machine vision, beginning lighting and optics, basic vision software and algorithms, and camera and image sensor technology basics. Taiwan LCD Industry Sales more than doubled in first quarter.

Taiwan's LCD revenues surged 125% to NT$273 billion from NT$121 billion in same period 1 year ago as consumers started buying more TVs that use large flat panel displays. According to report by market research firm iSuppli, global revenue from shipments of large LCD panels used in TVs is set to rise by 40% to US$49.2 billion in 2010 from US$35.2 billion in 2009. Revenue growth will be driven by rising demand, shift to larger sized displays, and accelerating sales of higher value panels. Read More

TETDC reports 53% rise in Taiwan PC sales in Q1 2010.

Sales revenues for Taiwan PC companies have rebounded by 53% over Q1 2009, based on revenue statements that companies file to Taiwan stock exchange authorities each month. Taiwan External Trade Development Council said that Asustek Computer, which owns ASUS brand, led Acer, Inc. and MSI in sales growth, with 85% jump in revenues, while contract manufacturer Compal had 98% jump in sales growth. Taiwanese companies make nearly ¾ of world's PCs and about ½ of world's LCDs. Read More

EPA state and local air agencies, marking Air Quality Awareness Week, remind Americans to stay Air Aware to reduce exposure and contribution to air pollution. By following Air Quality Index (AQI) recommendations, people can reduce amount of pollution they breathe and associated health risks stemming from ozone (smog) and particle pollution. Proficiency Testing Program on Elemental Analyses of Thermoplastics by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Utilizing Compression Molded Specimens will be offered in 2011. It assists laboratories that need statistical QA tool that will help improve and maintain performance in conducting XRF analyses of polyolefins. Under Energy Star Challenge for Industry, manufacturing sites establish energy intensity baseline, set 10% reduction goal, implement energy efficiency projects, track energy use, and verify savings. EPA has recognized first group of manufacturing sites that have met Energy Star Challenge for Industry and reduced their energy intensity by 10% within 5 years or less. NTSB Report examines US Airways 1549 Hudson River ditching.

Decisions and actions of flight crewmembers and overwater safety equipment saved lives during January 15, 2009, accident in which US Airways A320 jetliner bound for Charlotte was ditched into the Hudson River. At conclusion of the 15-month investigation, investigators said forward slide/rafts prevented 64 occupants from drowning. Report also notes that "bird strike hazards to commercial aircraft are not limited to any predictable scenario," and makes 35 safety recommendations in different areas. Read More
