IPC Members visit Congressional offices in D.C.

June 23, 2010

IPC members participated in IPC's Capitol Hill Day June 9-10, where they visited 70 Congressional offices advocating support for legislations to strengthen North American electronic interconnect industry. Critical manufacturing competitiveness issues, including research and development tax credits and defense readiness, were paramount in discussions throughout event. NSF certifies reactivated carbon for water treatment.

NSF International announced that Calgon Carbon Corporation's plant in Blue Lake, CA is first to receive NSF certification for reactivated carbon used for water treatment. NSF certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects verifies that reactivated carbon is safe for reuse in municipal water treatment applications, such as those used to treat river, lake, or well water, making it potable for humans. Standards announced for private sector preparedness.

Department of Homeland Security announced adoption of standards for Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification. PS-Prep program is a partnership between DHS and private sector that came about following a recommendation of 9/11 Commission to improve private sector preparedness for disasters and emergencies. Under agreement with DHS, ANSI - American Society for Quality National Accreditation Board will be the accreditation body for PS-Prep Program. Read More

National Identity Verification Standard to be developed by NASPO.

ANSI-accredited standards developer North American Security Products Organization (NASPO) announced plans to hold meeting to commence development of national identity verification standard. Meeting will take place in Kansas City, MO on July 12 at 1 pm and end next day at 4:30 pm. Energy Star helps auto plants improve energy efficiency.

According to report by Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University, U.S. EPA Energy Star program has helped improve energy efficiency of auto manufacturing industry, which has cut fossil fuel use by 12% and reduced greenhouse gases by more than 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide. UL Inc. has acquired RFI Global Services Ltd, a leading provider of testing, approval, and consultancy services to global technology market, including data security, cellular, wireless, and smart card technologies. Company will be integrated into UL's Verification Services business, which provides performance testing, inspection, and auditing for product manufacturers and retailers worldwide. ASTM Committee approves latest corrosion inhibitor standard.

Part of ASTM International Committee G01 on Corrosion of Materials, Subcommittee G01.05 on Laboratory Corrosion Tests has been developing series of standards on performance testing of corrosion inhibitors, including most recently approved ASTM G202, Test Method for Using Atmospheric Pressure Rotating Cage. In addition, G01.05 is developing ASTM WK27103, Guide for Determining Corrosivity of Crude Oils, which will be used by production personnel, pipeline operators, and refinery operators. Read More

ASHRAE publishes 2010 residential IAQ standard.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2010 is the only nationally recognized indoor air quality standard developed solely for residences. It defines roles of and minimum requirements for mechanical and natural ventilation systems and building envelope intended to provide acceptable indoor air quality in low-rise residential buildings. Standard also encourages home retrofits to improve IAQ through allowance of alternative methods for meeting standard's requirements regarding kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. Read More

US EPA is hosting 4 public information meetings on proposed study of relationship between hydraulic fracturing and its potential impacts on drinking water. Meetings will provide public information about proposed study scope and design, and EPA will solicit public comments on draft study plan. A new work item on Gaseous hydrogen - Cylinders and tubes for stationary storage has begun in ISO/TC 197. Working Group 15 met for first time to discuss draft scope. Standard will cover pressure vessels up to max water capacity of 10,000 L and max pressure of 110 MPa, of seamless metallic construction or of composite construction. Task groups were formed to address conditions of use, composite cycling and composites stress rupture, and hydrogen embrittlement. Read More
