Automation Experts to participate in standards development.

U.S. experts in relevant fields, such as automation systems and integration, can help determine future of their industries through active participation in U.S. Technical Advisory Groups to ISO Technical Committees and Subcommittees. U.S. TAG is currently seeking interested experts to participate in ISO groups: TC 184, Automation systems and integration; TC 184, SC 4, Industrial data; and TC 184, SC 5, Interoperability, integration, and architectures for enterprise systems and automation applications. IPC releases PCB industry results for July 2012.

According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 4.2% in July 2012 from July 2011, and bookings decreased 5.7% year over year. Book-to-bill ratio registered 1.00, exactly at parity. Flexible circuit shipments in July 2012 were up 15.4%, while bookings were down 35.0% compared to July 2011, and book-to-bill ratio dipped to 1.03. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, shipments in July 2012 decreased 2.6% and orders booked decreased 8.4% from July 2011. Read More

OSA Journal discusses tool to diagnose PAD.

OSA's open-access journal, Biomedical Optics Express, discusses new optical diagnostic tool created by Columbia University researchers that may make it easier to diagnose and monitor peripheral arterial disease, a serious complication of diabetes. Noninvasive imaging technique - known as dynamic diffuse optical tomography imaging - uses near-infrared light to map concentration of hemoglobin in body's tissue. This mapping can reveal how effectively blood is flowing to patients' hands and feet. Read More

NEMA publishes revised DICOS Standard for airport security.

September 4, 2012

NEMA has published NEMA IIC 1 v02 Digital Imaging and Communications in Security Information Object Definitions. Revised standard maintains extensible, interoperable data format that enables integration of security screening technologies across multiple vendor platforms. Standard now includes Advanced Imaging Technology or AIT, which is used to examine passengers at airports, and a more complete definition of one type of Threat Detection Report, known as Operator. Nanotechnology Standards Panel to meet in October 2012.

Scheduled for October 30 in Washington, DC, ANSI's Nanotechnology Standards Panel (ANSI-NSP) meeting will include updates from standards developing organizations (SDOs) developing nanotechnology standards as well as from industry representatives regarding their current needs in this area. ANSI-NSP encourages participation from SDOs as well as representatives from companies, government agencies, consumer groups, and academics. Read More

A and WMA Conference to address effects of aerosol.

On Sept 24-28, Air and Waste Management Association will hold Aerosol and Atmospheric Optics Visibility and Air Pollution Conference, which will address advances in scientific understanding of effects of aerosol on urban, regional, continental, and global scale haze and radiation balance. Special sessions have been added to cover hot topics such as black carbon as well as effects of atmospheric nitrogen and carbonaceous material on haze, climate change, and nitrogen deposition on ecosystems. Emergency Fuel Waiver has been approved for Louisiana.

August 31, 2012

Under authority granted by Clean Air Act, EPA temporarily waived certain federal clean gasoline requirements for Louisiana to promote flexibility for fuel distribution system to ensure adequate supply. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson determined extreme and unusual supply circumstances exist that are likely to result gasoline shortage compliant with federal regulations. Waiver will help ensure adequate supply of gasoline in Louisiana until normal supply can be restored to region. Read More
