FAA to increase safety and efficiency of Florida airspace.

Acting Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta announced collaborative NextGen effort that will increase safety and efficiency while reducing aircraft emissions for passengers, air traffic controllers, and airlines flying into and out of Miami, Orlando, and Tampa metropolitan areas. Metroplex initiative is based on Performance-Based Navigation, which enables pilots to fly aircraft using satellite coverage or by using on-board flight management system, allowing shorter, more direct routes. NAM Senior VP of Policy and Government Relations, Aric Newhouse, issued statement after NAM announced it would key vote in support of H.R. 6429, the STEM Jobs Act. According to Newhouse, as the global economy grows more competitive, every effort must be made to ensure that, in the absence of qualified homegrown candidates, foreign-born students educated in U.S. have opportunity to apply their talents here rather than taking them abroad. FAA Awards Communications Contract to bolster NextGen programs.

September 24, 2012

Harris Corporation Government Communications Systems, with subcontracting team, will provide Data Communications Integrated Services (DCIS) as step forward in Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) programs. This will supplement voice communications currently used in commercial aviation with digital system for clear, efficient communication between air traffic controllers, flight deck, and pilots. FAA will deploy data communications in air traffic control towers by 2016. Monitoring Efforts will track water quality improvements.

Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient (Hypoxia) Task Force is launching 2 efforts to monitor reductions in nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) throughout watershed. Mississippi River Monitoring Collaborative will evaluate progress toward reducing amount of nutrients entering local waterways. Also, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is preparing to update its technical standard for water quality monitoring to better measure amount of nutrients coming from farm fields. Read More

Standard addresses polymer degradation in marine environment.

September 24, 2012

An ongoing study of biodegradation rates of polymers has led to development of ASTM D7473, Test Method for Weight Attrition of Plastic Materials in the Marine Environment by Open System Aquarium Incubations. Standard is under jurisdiction of Subcommittee D20.96 on Environmentally Degradable Plastics and Biobased Products, which is part of ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics. It will be used by companies that make biodegradable polymers or items that will be disposed at sea. Read More

Oil Spill Standard addresses in-situ burning effectiveness.

ASTM International Committee F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response has approved several standards for in-situ burning. Latest proposed standard, ASTM WK37324, Guide for Evaluation of In-Situ Burning Effectiveness, is being developed by Subcommittee F20.15 on In-Situ Burning. Proposed guide will help standardize evaluation of burn and produce results that will be consistent among different users, enhancing accuracy and credibility of information. Read More
