AIA President urged Supplemental Appropriations Bill passage.

Marion C. Blakey, AIA President and CEO, said it was important that Congress complete passage of 2010 Supplemental Appropriations Bill to avoid disruptions to ongoing military operations and impacts in private sector. If bill wasn't passed, Defense Department would need to take dramatic action to fund obligations to ongoing operations. Resulting disruptions to industrial supply lines will cause delays in critical equipment delivery, increased costs, and lost jobs. Read More

IPC and ESDA release ESD training video for electronics assembly.

ESD training video, DVD-74C, ESD Control for Electronics Assembly, helps operators deal with effects of shrinking geometries, increased performance requirements, and lower operating voltages. It features overview of ESD physics, including static electricity generation and triboelectric charging, and ESD failure models as well as techniques to control ESD in accordance with ESDA standard ANSI/ESD S20.20. EPA proposes 2011 renewable fuel standards.

Under Renewable Fuel Standard program, EPA proposed percentage standards for 4 fuel categories. Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 established annual renewable fuel volume targets, and to achieve these volumes, EPA calculates percentage-based standard for following year. Proposed 2011 volumes include 0.80 billion gal, 0.68% biomass-based diesel; 1.35 billion gal, 0.77% advanced biofuels; 5-17.1 million gal, 0.004-0.015% cellulosic biofuels; and 13.95 billion gal, 7.95% total renewable fuels. IPC and IPCA Comment on India's proposed E-waste Rules 2010.

Addressing proposed substance restrictions, IPC and Indian Printed Circuits Association (IPCA) submitted comments in response to Indian Government's Ministry of Environment and Forests draft notification of E-waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2010. Proposed Chapter V simultaneously restricts 20 substances that will not contribute to environmentally sound disposal of electronic products. Also, list of substances for restriction should be harmonized with RoHS Directives in EU and China. Read More

ASTM Symposium to address static and dynamic spinal implants.

Scheduled for November 16, 2010, ASTM International's symposium titled "Static and Dynamic Spinal Implants: Are We Evaluating Them Appropriately?" will provide scientific forum to evaluate existing standard test methods for spinal implants. Participants will learn how current standards are succeeding in predicting clinical failure modes, where current standards are lacking and how they should be changed, and what new test methods are needed. Papers are invited for ASTM International Symposium on Fracture Mechanics Applied to Metallic Medical Materials and Devices, which will be held in Tampa, FL on November 16, 2011. ASTM Cavanaugh Award honors Gregory E. Saunders.

Gregory E. Saunders, director of the Defense Standardization Program Office for the U.S. Department of Defense, has been named recipient of 2010 W.T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award. Long an advocate for use of standards and their development through public-private partnerships, Saunders led DOD contributions to U.S. National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act. He also worked on recommendations in favor of a federal government policy to encourage use of voluntary standards. Read More

Safety Recommendations address new 10,000+ lb vehicles.

NTSB recommendations H-10-01 through H-10-007, made to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cover development of stability control system performance standards; requiring vehicle stability and lane departure warning systems on new vehicles with gross weight above 10,000 lb; as well as development and promotion of regulatory definitions and classifications for different bus body types. Manufacturing Technology Consumption up 52.9% in 2010.

Based on data from participating companies, AMT and AMTDA United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption report shows that $178.34 million total manufacturing technology consumption in May 2010 was down 22.9% from April but up 58.6% from May 2009. Compared to 2009, year-to-date total of $966.63 million for 2010 is up 52.9%. "Industry forecasts for the year have been revised slightly upward by many sources," said Peter Borden, President of AMTDA. Read More

Available from MPIF, Powder Metallurgy-Intrinsically Sustainable details measures that quantify contributions powder metallurgy (PM) makes to sustainable manufacturing. Metal Powder Industry Rebounding according to MPIF President.

At PowderMet2010, MPIF president Michael E. Lutheran said metal powder industry returned to its growth track. Second half of 2009 showed 28% rebound in iron powder shipments, and that continued into first quarter of 2010 when shipments were 64% above same period in 2009. Also, first quarter 2010 copper and copper-base powder shipments rose 36%. Other positive indicators were cited for light-vehicle market, powder metallurgy, metal injection molding, and hot isostatic pressing. Read More

Announced at PowderMet2010, MPIF identified variable valve timing (VVT) as Powder Metallurgy (PM) Industry Landmark technology for its use of PM parts. Technology assists automakers to meet environmental and fuel-efficiency standards by advancing or retarding timing of intake/exhaust valves.
