NASA picks space technology proposals for development.

NASA's Space Technology Program has selected 5 technologies that could revolutionize America's space capabilities. The following proposals were selected for funding: Representing and Exploiting Cumulative Experience with Objects for Autonomous Manipulation; Lightweight High Performance Acoustic Suppression Technology Development; Fast Light Optical Gyroscopes for Precision Inertial Navigation; EHD-Based Variable Conductance Thermal Interface Material; and Membrane Enabled Reverse Lung. ANSI-IREC Program issues first set of accreditations.

Three certificate-awarding entities have been accredited under ANSI-IREC pilot program for personnel training/education programs within energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. They include CalCERTS for training of Home Energy Rating System raters; CleanTech Education for training focused on solar photovoltaics and heating, energy efficiency, wind energy, green IT, and smart grid; and Midwest Renewable Energy Association, providing training related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. CONSTRUCT 2012 focuses on building science.

Scheduled for September 11-14, CONSTRUCT 2012 and The Annual Construction Specifications Institute Convention offer a number of educational sessions focused on building science. National Institute of Building Sciences staff will teach three of them, including: buildingSMART Data Dictionary and OmniClass; Specifying for High-Performance Buildings; and 21st Century Challenge: Achieving High Performance for the Building Envelope. AEM publishes updated Truck-Mounted Forklift Safety Manual.

Developed with help of AEM member manufacturers, Truck-Mounted Forklift Safety Manual outlines basic safety situations that may be encountered during normal operation and maintenance and suggests possible ways of dealing with these conditions. Some significant content changes include: more accurate information specific to different machine configurations; guidance for traveling while unloaded; expanded instructions for operating on uneven terrain; and section explaining load stability factors. Safety Recommendation will prevent taxiing airplane collisions.

September 6, 2012

NTSB recommended that FAA require large airplanes to be equipped with anti-ground collision aid, such as on-board external-mounted camera system, to provide pilots with clear view of plane's wingtips while taxiing. This would ensure clearance from other aircraft, vehicles, and obstacles while eliminating need for pilot to extend his or her head out of open cockpit window to see airplane's wingtips. NTSB made same recommendation to European Aviation Safety Agency. Read More

Solder Skills Competition heading to Northeast.

Scheduled for Sept 18 in Boxborough, MA, Northeast Regional Solder Skills Competition will pit expert technicians against each other to build functional electronics assembly within 30-min time limit. Judges will evaluate soldering assemblies in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, cleanliness, and technique. Cash prizes will be awarded to top 3 finalists, and first place winner will earn complimentary airfare, hotel stay, and entrance into international grand championship at IPC APEX EXPO®. Read More
